Integrated GPU in the CPU

Which is the main purpose of this "fusion"?
I mean, we all are happy to have add on GPUs
Also, how much does that affect speed of the gpu?

it makes communication between the two muc hfaster, leading to a very large jump in performance from teh same tech using PCI-E bus, and similar gpu/cpu. The XBOX360 slim is the perfect example of this...they had to add a buffer to slow things down so older games wouldn't run super-speed.

it means that if you buy a cpu from intel, intel also gets the money you would spend on a graphics card.

for office pcs it's one thing less that can break, generally simplifying things

don't expect high-end performance from a gpu inside the cpu. you are limited by power and heat.

my prediction is that for the forseeable future, fusion of gpu and cpu will give you the performance of a $50 graphics card inside the cpu, not more.

And, they might find ways for the CPU to use the GPU's processing power for other than graphical applications. Like use the GPU as an extension to the CPU's FPU.

the bonus that comes out of that is that today's 50$ GPU is probably around as fast as 5 years ago's ~$400 GPU, so in 5 years if we have a 'fusion' style CPU/GPU chip where the GPU component can be even as fast as say a GTX460/6870, that's progress IMO.

what i mean is, in a few years hopefully the CPU/GPU hyprid chips will habe the graphical power of a GTX460/HD6870.

it means that at 22nm compared to todays 44nm we should be able to get a cpu/gpu combo of 8 cores and a 6950 gpu core in one 300mm die basically. by 2012 no less.

think of it like this, bulldozer is 8 core and supposed to be on 32nm IIRC, the 45nm 6 core thuban 1055t is a 258mm sq chip, the current 40nm 6970 is around 334mm sq IIRC, with a node jump that big, we could easily see something akin to a thuban with a 6970 gpu on board.

kind of crazy when you think about it.

this is of course at 18-20nm mind you which IIRC Global foundrys and TSMC are planning for 2012. so as early as 2012 we could see some massive apu performance.

Because the integrated GPU market doesn't really compete with the dedicated card market. They are really just taking what is normally on the northbridge of the chipset and moving it onto the CPU package. They are the only one really producing chipsets at this point anyway, so they are just moving around where they are putting things.

Well its part that, its also reducing component count on the motherboard.

Its also about die shrinks. pretty soon around 18nm "if sources are correct" making the features smaller only allows more densly packaed features, not higher clocks. So they have to start adding more capability to the chips. when everything is on one piece of silicon performance will jump dramatically.

Its all about having the best single chip solution. I bet we start seeing ram at 12nm or so on the chip.
