going from a E6300 to a Q6600 ($100 upgrade)

or

going from a 4850 to a 4870X2 ($166 upgrade)

Thanks!

Going to need to do both tbh. Maybe sell one of your LCD's, pickup a 2nd 4850 or gtx460 and above, then use your funds for a quad.

This is a nice suggestion too. Plus a single GTX460 is enough for gaming at 1080P and the extra cash from the LCD will get you a Quad Core CPU.

The board doesn't support crossfire.

Which GTX460, there seems to be multiple versions.

GTX 460 1GB (NON-SE). Get from one of the following:

1- Gigabyte SOC GTX 460 1GB
2- MSI GTX 460 1GB HAWK
3- Sparkle Calibre X460 1GB

Definitely go with the Q6600 over the 4870x2. A more modern graphics card would be a much better investment as others have mentioned.

I personally have 3 year old Q6600 that still runs fine, and haven't looked at a dual core since.

Get the quad and bump it up to at least 3 ghz (probably wont even need a voltage change), then start working on the card. You could really use both.

If you're getting a Q6600, get the SLACR stepping. They overclock like you wouldn't believe. If your games are CPU bound rather than GPU bound with your current setup, then getting one of these and overclocking the hell out of it might solve more issues than a video card upgrade.

Depends on which games.

But Ide imagine the 4870x2 upgrade giving you more FPS.

But if he's CPU bound, the FPS won't go up as much as it could with a faster CPU. He has to determine whether the games he is playing are more limited by his CPU or his GPU but upgrading the CPU will help whatever GPU he ultimately decides on to deliver higher framerates. A faster GPU paired with a CPU that can't keep up is no better than if he goes with a slower card that merely matches the speed of the CPU because the additional GPU power will never be used.

Video editing of game play is slow. I assume that's a CPU issue?

Unsure of what you meant. If you are video editing you are going to want a quad.
