Gran Turismo (essentially) for the PC?

I want a good car sim with lots of cars, lots of tracks, lots of races, and the ability to make your car better like in Gran Turismo. No I don't want Need for speed.

I didn't like Grid myself. There really isn't much for the pc that is like Gran Turismo. Games like Shift are about as good as it gets. Toca race driver series are pretty good but older now. For realism GT Legends, GTR, GTR2, GTR EVO, Race 07, Race On...these are the very best sim games that I have played but NFS Shift is a lot of fun too.

It's hard because not many companies make quality racing sim games for the pc.

Indeed, barring the Need for Speed games it's really just Grid left. There are some other games, but there aren't that much cars and tracks available for them and customization and upgrades are practically nonexistent.

Test Drive Unlimited and in a month or so Test Drive Unlimited 2.

You can upgrade and tweak cars, but not to the same levels as GT.

TDU is a great game but sim it is not and you don't get to tweak your cars...
TDU2 is alright. Beta was only okay but I do look forward to its release.

TDU is one of those games thats fun to fire up just to take a car for a drive.

Hmm I thought you could add exhaust, chips, tires and stuff. Just couldn't get into gear ratio's or what not. Been a long time since I played, but I thought you could... my bad if I'm wrong.

It was an awesome game. But yeah more arcade then sim.

Just wiki'd it and yeah, you can tune and mod cars.

Don't rule out Dirt2 or the upcoming Dirt 3!

Dirt2 is a very realistic game in graphics and a great and fun game...Maybe you could try a demo of it.

I've never been a fan of car games...period. GT is the only decent driving type game I've ever played...and I do give plenty of games solid chances.

A while back, BMW released a free game. It only has a few tracks and only the BMW M3, but the handling etc is extremely realistic. Give it a shot.

My first choice so far is Grid lot more realistic driving & better graphics than Shift or any other racing games made so far imo

Second would be Toca Race Driver 2 (TRD2) I got TRD3 but i don't like the console interface (gets me mad) & i don't see it as any better looking than TRD2 i think it is even worst...

Third would be Shift

All that said i don't play often these games since i play more FPS games than anything else but i do like the change of paste from time to time...

Yes i just had a quick try and it seems to play pretty good and looks nice to, The only downside is it seems to be online only inless i missed an option for single player mode. :toast:

What about simbin? Their GTR series were pretty good simulations. Especially if you like to do qualifications to get a better place on the starting grid, stuff like that. Was pretty good. A lot of people overlook these games, but they were pretty solid imho.

I think a lot of people overlook these games because they don't have a steering wheel and to be honest these games are pretty useless to play on a pad or keyboard, I've tryed a few of the GTR games and i dident like the feel of them but then again i don't have a steering wheel thats of any use in these games.

Yeah maybe, can't comment on that since I myself, only play on gamepads, so for me it was solid.

Anyways, the fact is you won't get too many "real" sims nowadays. A lot of games will promote the fact that its "sim" but in reality, it ain't the truth. Real sim games don't sell that well. Just look at GRID, it had to change its name completely from Toca Race Driver, which even though it was a great game, it didn't have the "appeal" and sell that much. There must be a reason Simbin got an award of best game that nobody played when the game shipped! :laugh:

The sad truth is, sims nowadays are 50% sim/50% arcade.

Thats because they are the only true sim game series to buy other than some of the online games such as Rfactor and LFS. Simbin make the most realistic driving sims but the visuals are falling behind and you don't have 'flash' you get with games like grid or dirt.

Grid by the way is no where near a true sim. I own it and its more arcade than sim. Shift is a mix, dirt is fun and dirt 2 is fun.

Yeah, thats the point I was making. And yeah, GRID is far from a complete sim. TRD imo was more... well if I start on that, I might take a million words! But they had, in order to sell more, bring in more charm and make the game easier so that it could sell bucketloads. (blame that on the NFS series, which with SHIFT are at least back on track) :laugh:

Sims are getting pretty much rare these days. I still miss the good old days where sims were the way to go, helis, aircraft, cars and stuff. Now its a rare breed.

I loved it when I played GT legends for the first time and kept stalling my race car because I didn't have a feel for the clutch yet. lol

Yeah a wheel is a must for true sim games but so worth the investment.
