Hey all,

My friend just gave me a call saying she was looking for a laptop to replace her 6 year old one. She's got a budget of 700 (or less preferably) and is looking for something reliable that will last a while w/ good battery life. She doesn't do all that much of intense things such as gaming, just the usual of watching a movie here or there, music and internet surfing.

She is also not opposed to a netbook idea either w/ an external dvd drive.

What do you all think, any recommendations?

any specific models to look for on newegg? My laptop knowledge is sub-par as I typically don't use them.

AMD's new fusion APU just came out recently and I would highly recommend them. Can play 1080p videos and do some mild gaming. Around 6 hours of battery life. It comes in a few different sizes from a few different vendors. Amazon appears to only have two currently. The HP DM1 and the Acer AS5253-BZ684. Clearly the 11.6 will have a better battery life and it has good reviews around the internet. You can order a DM1Z customized on the HP website for around $420 before tax with a coupon.

Not really; sorry I don't have time to really look. But Kenshai's option for the new AMD setup would also work.

HP G62t series with an i3 and a 7200rpm hard drive is hard to beat if you can find it for $500 or so, which you usually can. It has Intel HD graphics, so it isn't for playing games.

I'm really liking the one Kenshai suggested (the acer) Do you all agree with that?

Again, she pretty much will only surf the web, listen to music, and watch a movie here and there, no gaming beyond solitaire and no cpu intensive things.

For the money it is hard to beat it. I may have gone with it if it was out when I ordered my dm1z.
