As far as the stock market is concerned, Advanced Micro Devices may be up for sale. AMD's shares were significantly up yesterday, apparently on rumors that Dell is interested in buying the American multinational semiconductor company. Barron's reported on the rumor first:

Why does everyone need to know this rumour? Someone looking for community reaction to the idea, or just interesting tidbit?

Would be nice to see it pulled off, but this does not make much business sense, even to me. I mean, I understand why Dell might make this move, and how it could rock the industry if executed well, but I'm not too sure that all teh current liscencing rights from Intel that AMD has would still be valid...

Not true. They could just buy majority share and gain control without merging the company. This would be much like they did with Alienware. Note that while they are Dell control and Dell handles their orders now, Alienware still uses their logo instead of Dell's on their stuff. They also still have nearly complete creative freedom for new products.

If this is true, I doubt it would happen. Dell bought Alienware to avoid a lawsuit with AMD back in the day. I don't really think they are on good terms.

Well back in the early 939 days, AMD filed a lawsuit with Dell claiming they were basically accepting money from Intel to not use AMD processors. Their proof was at the time, there was only a few laptops with AMD processors, all entry level low end stuff. During the course of the suit, Dell negotiated a majority share buy out of Alienware (who really needed it due to several mishaps with their laptops overheating due to its design). While it is true this move could have been something Dell was working on before hand, this was the outcome.

At the time, Alienware always offered both an AMD and Intel option for all their desktops and I think their laptops as well. They also advertised the face they used AMD products. Once they were owned by Dell, AMD's lawsuit became moot because a part of Dell not only used AMD products, but bragged about it.

This situation did not stop AMD from filing other lawsuits against Dell and Intel for shady business practices, but I did not keep up with those so I don't know what happened between them after this incident.

I do know that Dell gets "assistance" from Intel and AMD is not financially able to do the same. This is why I want AMD to get to a point where they can pull an IBM and release vague, strangely cool commercials about how they are awesome. And if rumors help, go for it.

Wait so that's why they bought Alienware? I remember the AMD vs Dell thing (and the discussions we had here ^^) but I didn't notice the Alienware deal until afterwards.

Like I said, I can't be sure cause I don't work for either company. I do know that initial lawsuit was either dropped or modified or both because of the Alienware buy out. The whole thing just looked shady and still looks shady.

Incidentally, I don't think Alienware brand Dell computers use AMD processors or chipsets anymore. AMD can't say shit though because they carry ATI graphics cards as an option for all of them. :)

That would be the worst part. If they eventually got rid of the AMD branding. Dell is a shit name with an awful logo, having to see "dell" sections on forums, on newegg catagories... ugh. It'd be a hideous future indeed.

Im calling BS on this. What would it even mean to purchase AMD? They no longer have a fab and all their tech is built on a foundation of cross patent access with Intel and x86 licensing....so what is there to acquire? You buying a name and a few thousand employees? good luck getting that one past investors. And on a side note why would dell be interested at all? As it stands now dell pulls in parts from who ever can provided dell with the highest profit margins....so why would dell purchase a failing cpu company and have to invest billions a year to try and keep up with the market leader?

If AMD gets bought, I can see Intel being broken up to avoid them being too powerful in the business world. That sucks for everyone. AMD no longer making chips, and Intel being broken up into a bunch of shitass companies that make shitass products.

AMD's market cap is 6-7 bil and Dell has about 13-14 bil on hand. Sure it's unlikely (and I really don't think it'd happen) but Dell does have the capacity to do this. But if you look at their most recent acquisition/attempts AMD doesn't fit. (compellant/3par come to mind).

Umm maybe their gynormous IP portfolio, which if not bigger than Intel's is at least just as big because it includes both CPU and GPU patents...
