I have a buddy of mine who wants to know if mixing his Sapphire Toxic 5850 with an ASUS DirectCU 5850 would present him with any problems, whether it be software drivers or hardware. I was kind of wondering this myself because his brother Xfired a pair of 5830s but different brands and so far he hasn't encountered any problems.

He's got these specs(that I know of):
Core i7 930 @ stock
ASUS P6X58D-E

Nah, you can even mix within the series (4850/4870/4870x2, then 5850/5870/5970 and so on).

It was nVidia that required the BIOS's to match. Don't think they still do though.

Just to clarify further, wouldn't mixing like let's say a 5830 with his 5850 downgrade his performance as if he crossfired 2x 5830s? I remember hearing that the drivers won't allow like a 5830 + 5850 equal performance the right way....like his 5850 will automatically be downclocked to make CrossfireX compatible with the 5830?

you cant xfire 5830 with 5850 since its much different(16 vs 32 rops) ,not like the difference between 5850 and 5870

Id suggest sticking with one card because we all know what ATI... pardon AMD Radeon is most known for.

:nutkick: Ouch that hurt but even if this is true, selling the old and buying a new one will always save a few tears.

not at all. the CCC will treat each card as its own entity, it will not cripple 1 card to match the other performance wise like back in the day.

thats true -- Drivers will now mainly focus on the new cards (unfortunately) but the problem is the 6xxx didnt really surpass the 5xxx series much -- sure they are generally more optimised. but that has left the 5xxx series still holding its own despite being the older generation. If you can get some tasty overclocks on a 5850, it can still run almost head to head with a 6950 in most tests. but then again they arent AMDs focus anymore. they might tweak drivers for the 5xxx series for newer games and some older games but their not top priority anymore.

im sorry i dont mean to throw a wierd 1 but genuinely has anyone tried crossfireing a 5870 with a 6870 or 69xx im just asking because it would allow an easier transition (over a few months from my 5870) but with crossfire scaling?

i paid 320 for the 5870 when it came out and its got a full ek block on it so its goin no where except a htpc at some point

high chance of failure. Ive heard of only a few 5850s that managed to flash into 5870s without any problems -- extra pipes are still locked off as they are LASER CUT not bios locked. you can run the 5850 unlocked bios for the extra voltages n what not but it still wont be a 5870

Wait! I never knew this! (kinda a newb with computers)
so I can crossfire my Sapphire HD4870 1GB with a Sapphire HD6870?

And both cards would work together?

Wow, saves a lot of money!
