Solder Capacitor to PCB. tips :D

hihi,

long story short, Monitor stoped working over the space of about one week. opened it up and noticed two caps leaking... everything else looks fine.


so i would like to replace the caps myself, there decent size, (physicaly) 10v 3300uf.

i have a solder iron.. picking up some solder tomorrow.... already bought new caps from america on Ebay... apparently no local stores had the ones i needed.





is it as simple as heating the solder and joining sticking the wire through the PCB?, its been about 6 years since i last had ago at soldering

There is two ways of doing this:
1)unsolder leaky capacitor and try to get rid of old solder, in holes where capacitor leads was in, by sucking it out with special sucking device (or heat it up and stick something sharp in the hole, like sharpened wood stick) to get the solder out. Then place capacitor in and soder it.

or
2) Unsolder capacitor and touch both soldering holes with soldering iron tip, so you heat both holes at the same time, and then just stick new capacitor in, while solder is hot and in liquid form. That is easiest way I think.

what i like using was special wire you can use that sucks the solder in to it or if you use a solder sucker make sure it works as i hav come accoss a few that don't work right no matter how good you are.

Make sure your solder tip is only the same or a little bit bigger than what your using it on and make sure the soldering iron is not on the board long at all.

Any chance you have somthing old you can test on 1st to make sure you have it right and your timing is good..

Hi... Last time i soldered, someone told me reliable solder is a must... i quickly understood why, because the solder i used wasn't really fit to solder small components, as it didn't quite adhere to the component as much as it should, making the job quite the adventure... That being said, i was told solder containing a resin core is pretty good for component soldering, you might wan't to check on that with the store clerk before buying.

Yes sir i do, rosin core is the one... Damn my spelling... Thanks! (Although Rosin still qualifies as a type of resin ^^)

Actually yo are both right, there is Resin and Rosin - one natural and other synthetic.
