I've got two 21" monitors but want to splurge this spring to hop on either 3 23.6" Asus LED monitors or grab myself a giant 42" or something (HANNspree makes a 42" 120hz 1920x1080 for around $520, Sceptre makes a 42" just like it for $550, and both have 4/5 or 5/5 reviews on NE).

The question begs... one giant monitor and flank it with one of my 21"s for vent etc or go tri-screen. I've played on both and that's why I'm torn.

With one big screen you don't have to worry about eyefinity working properly with this game or that game etc, but it may not be as immersive as triscreen

I would say it really depends.
If you are looking at a big screen (like the 42" you listed below), but it only displays 1920 x 1080 I would say go with eyefinity triple setup since 3 x 23" screens will have much higher resolution.

But if you go for a quality 30" monitor, then I would rather go for that; like a dell which displays at 2560x1600 resolution.

But thats just me.
Also I hear that you wont notice bezels between monitors when playing games.
But I would still look for LED backlit monitors as they have thinner bezels.

I used a giant monitor for a while and for gaming it was sweet. But for anything text/typing related it was beyond bad; even with tweaking settings non-stop I could not get the text to sharpen up the way I wanted it to. I'd say go for an eyefinity set-up if you want to game (if you do, then buy my monitors I'm selling haha :toast:)

I just ordered a HP ZR30W (30", S-IPS, 2560×1600) yesterday since I got a total kickass deal for it. Been stuck with a 20.1" 1680×1050 peek-a-screen for too long already.

yeah been talkign to a guy here at work that games and we decided that 42" at any reasonable distance from your face on the desk will just be neck-craning HUGE and that a 32" or a 30" would be sensible.

I'll keep my eyes open for deals etc. How much was your 30", Largon? I know that the higher the resolution the happier I'll be in the long run.

I played on a friend's 3x24" Asus setup (SLI 470's) and it was not that bad and you only notice the bezels at first and then you get used to them (like scratches on sunglasses). But I just don't want all the issues I commonly read with people randomly having with their tri-screen setup. He had 4 monitors (one smaller one dangling above them from the wall) and had to disable it to get BFBC2 to work without crashing the first 5 minutes. I'm testing a game or two right now as well and tri-screen isn't integrated into them at this point. With the amount of time I spend on stumbleupon and reddit also I think just one large monitor would make me happier, I dunno.

+1, that's also what I did. I went from a single cheap 1280x1024 17" to a quite good LG 1680x1050 22" to a 27" 2560x1440. It's better investing in one really good monitor. Personally I never knew true color rendition, even when viewed from a wide angle, till I bought this Dell. It's only now that I appreciate it. Plus I would never get accustomed to bezels... and the wide&low picture offered by 3 screens, those features would break up the immersion for me. Now I'm sorry I didn't buy an even bigger single screen ie 30" 2560x1600.....:ohwell:

I have both, 30-inch monitor, and 3x 1080p screens, prefer the single for everything except racing games.

If you want my 30" Dell, you will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands.
(so 30" 2560x1600 gets my vote too.)

man, seems like one is clearly preferred over the other... Now I'll just have to keep an eye out for a good 30" or 32" or something like that. I'll do my research on reviews and start making a list.

thanks for all the comparisons, everyone :p

I don't know. I've been using two monitors for years, and really I don't think I could go back. Having different "compartments" for everything has really improved my workflow, so if I were to do it, I would go with the tri-monitor setup.

Then again, I've never owned a 30" monitor before, so maybe I'm missing out. :D

well I've got two 21" monitors so I'll likely be keeping one of them on the side no matter what and possibly flipping it 90 degrees upright

42" isnt that great for PC gaming, as an owner of a 40" i can say you wont enjoy it as much. its not like a console where you sit 5 meters away with a gamepad on a couch, you need a desk/chair/mouse/keyboard, and you'd be planted in the middle of the room to do so with such a large screen.

my advice is a single 27/30" hi res desktop monitor. 1080p minimum.

I've got the cash for it but have decided I just don't want to spend $1200-$1400 on a monitor. I mean, I suppose people that spend $1200 on a new LCD TV that they come home and watch every night after work are getting their money's worth because they use it every day. Well I don't watch TV but I get on my PC literally every single day for at least 2-3 hours... so a $1200 investment would be well worth it. But I can grab a 27" Asus with an "almost as high" 1080p resolution for a mere $300. I could go triscreen 27's for the same price (i'm not, just getting one to pair with my 21's).

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions to what each of you would do though. Helped me be ok with spending $1200 on a monitor but in the end decided that there were other things I could spend the remaining $800 on - like a honeymoon coming up, some stuff for the Lotus, a new desk, etc etc. Hell I could even grab another 6970 and an SSD for $800

ok one quick question for you all - LED or CCFL?

The 27" Asus is currently out of stock and a guy I work with just purchased it. They do however have the 27" with LED backlighting for an extra $30 than he paid for it. I've heard mixed reviews. People say poor LED backlighting is miserable with leaks around the edge, but everyone that's purchased this 27" Asus LED have said they had no issues with that and that the only con is a slight blue/green hue to the light as opposed to a yellow/orange hue to the normal CCFL LCD monitor.

Any opinions? Thinking about biting the bullet today and grabbing the LED LCD and just wanted someone's $.02

LED itself cannot cause backlight leaking or anything like that. thats just variance between monitors.

LED backlit monitors tend to be thinner, lighter, and brighter/clearer so i say go for it.
