Not when people say HL have the best stories ever because that's just not true.

Thats their opinion, not yours.

Thats their opinion, not yours.

The majority is always wrong!

That is why mainstream entertainment is sorely lagging behind alternative entertainment in terms of original ideas and engaging content.

Modern video gaming by its very nature is such that any title that is going to see the light of day, is going to require humongous inputs of cash and therefore, will be designed with a sales maximising unadventurous idea stifling mentality right from the very start, and then shoved down the throats of the indiscriminate majority (who will all rave about the product cos they dont know any better).

Hence the games are getting ever cooler in terms of special FX, but also by and large, ever increasingly shitter.

Riiight. Overhype is getting worse and worse. When Daikatana got released everyone and his ugly sister started to bash it but at the same time they were worshiping half-life, counter strike or something else. The best FPS era was when Quake and Unreal were kicking around. 3rd person shooters also had their best time. Now all the games are copycatting each other and nothing more. And today in mainstream and Lady gag-me era when someone is speaking his mind he just gets "haters gonna hate" or some other lame reply.

Under what law can the minority be right ?
I agree with you that many of the current mainstream games could use a push. But you must realise that the gaming industry evolve and you're living in the past. You cannot compare the current gamers population to that of 10 or 20 years ago.

You want to make a game that brings back the good ol' days ? By all means go ahead. And I'll be the first in line to buy it. But don't expect many others to be so eager because let me assure you that if it ain't mainstream it ain't going to sell.

Many good games with great stories but one that stands out in my mind is Clive Barker's Undying.

Wonderful story. One of the few games that I still think of from time to time.

I would love to see a remake with todays tech.

Deus Ex, maybe the main story is not SO great but all the little conversations gave it the edge.

Stalker had a good twist in it at the first time.

It was awesome.

Exactly. It was actually the building block for Mirrors Edge. A true first person perspective. Sure the guns were worthless later on and the controls were a bit too sloppy, but I still went through it three times. The end couple of levels are just insane in difficulty.

I'm probably the only person I know who enjoyed MGS 4, due to being a die-hard MGS fan.

It had a pretty great story. It also wrapped up the story as a whole very nicely, or at least I thought so.

Ooooh, tough choice here. I think it's a toss up between the Mass Effect Trilogy or the Assassin's Creed games.

Frankly I find the majority of games to have cliche-ridden, obviously derivative stories and I think this comes down to - 1) keep it simple and straight-forward so they don't confuse (or offend) their audience 2) they aren't creative geniuses and are also making derivative gameplay 3) they are more interested in making fun gameplay than storytelling.

Anyway, games shouldn't be all about following yet another high minded storyline through paint-by-numbers gameplay. They are supposed to be interactive playgrounds where you make the decisions and create your own story. Or they can even just forgo story entirely and just create a universe that is a story on its own (see Doom).
