So, I'm getting a new setup based around i7 2600k and Gigabyte P67A UD7. Looking for a great cooler to push this baby to 4.5-4.7 ghz. I was considering H70 but I'm a bit afraid of using pup-based cooler and I'm a bit afraid of potential problems with it such as leaks. Any other great coolers that will fir 1155 that you might suggest ? ( Silver Arrow was my bet, but IDK if it'll fit)

Thermal Right Venomous X (biased), Noctua D14, and Silver Arrow are the best out there. Next in line would be a PT Megahalems (owned 2), Thermaltake Frio (tested 1) etc. Can't really lose with any of them in dual fan configuration. My bias with the VX is the cooler power matched with a fairly small footprint compared to the other leading coolers.

I do have Venomous X, It's awsome, but idk if it'll fit the socet. Also H70 seem to produce better results when it comes to heavy OCing

It fits 1156, so it fits 1155. Trust Paulie, he is not your average "oh lets suggest something to up my post count" person.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/36907-coolit-vantage-l-c-review-8.html

Difference between VX and H70 is small, almost negligible.

Well, if you strap a fast and loud fan to the VX you will get that performance too, so need not worry about that. 2 degrees is not what I call a lot:http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...rmalright-venomous-x-cpu-cooler-review-8.html

Couldn't have said any of this better. The H70 is $90-$100, the VX is $60. When we are talking 2-3c, I'm not seeing the value of stepping to a H70. If you want water, then really go custom water for significantly better temps. You can put together a decent loop for about $30-$40 more than the H70, which is coincidentally the price difference b/t the H70 and VX. There you will some real differences.

Hmmm ok.... so do you think Silver Arrow will fit fine ?

Depends how high your memory heatspreaders and MB heatsinks are.

if the 2600K can do 5ghz on the stock cooler why are we all suggesting mountainous coolers?

Buy whatever is cheapest, looks nice, and "fits" with the ram in you build. I would personally suggest the H60 over the H70, and even then the Antec H20 620 over that. No need to worry about leaks, run the unit out of the case prior to using it just to be sure its good to go first if you have doubts. I have had just about every all-in-one water coolers and none have leaked.

If you want to go cheaper, the 212+ is a good bang for the buck cooler, but moving to one of those monster coolers is like 3-5 degrees difference at load over the a-i-o water coolers.

D14 is all you need. H70 is a waste of money. I know. I own one and the H70 will never leak as it's sealed.

Both decent coolers, but both are a tad weak if OP wants to push to upper 4.x Ghz.

If he were running a last gen CPU maybe, but this is SB, which can hit 5GHz with the stock cooler. Granted it runs at like 90c under load at those settings but either of the coolers I reccomended are decently priced and perform just as well as most of the coolers others are reccomending. Why pay $70 for a Heatsink when there's a $30 one that does just about the same thing (is 3c cooler on average worth 233% the price)?

You will need powerful and fast fans for the 212+ to keep up with the "monster coolers", and that comes with a high noise penalty. I have nothing against the "budget coolers", I will recommend them if OP is pushing for a low overclock (4ghz perhaps), however, I like the fans to run a bit quieter. Personal preference, I suppose.

since everyone keeps recommending all these big ass coolers, can I ask why since 5ghz is achievable on the stock cooling solution. I mean all he needs is a cooler, not one that can handle a i7 920 C0 but a sandybridge which doesn't get hot.

I wouldn't try stress testing at 5ghz on stock cooling, especially with avx. He says 4.5-4.7, that easily calls for an upper midrange cooler. SB is cooler than an i7 for sure but it can still make a good bit of heat. Even with a low end xigmatek on full blast I've seen them hit 90c.

Do you have proof of concept? This is the first I heard of heat even being somewhat of an issue under 5ghz.

Did a quick Google, I couldn't find anyone stressing their 4.5+Ghz overclock with stock coolers or otherwise. Personally, I think heat produced is roughly proportional to power draw, so even a Sandybridge CPU drawing way over 150w (which should not be that surprising at high overclocks), you will want a "monster" cooler to cool the chip. I am most likely wrong though.

Proof of concept? I could get you a screenshot next time I go to my friend's place. Couldn't tell ya when that would be. It's a xigmatek nepartak running ideally in the horizontal position with proper HDT application and one of the best pastes around. AVX + IBT and it still hits 90c. Hell I can get my 2600k to hit 80c on a H70 when I'm stressing 4.8ghz with AVX.

Sandybridge is either fucking impressive or those stock coolers are actually not that bad.

Ordered today a pair of ripjaws X, so hopefully they will solve the obstruction problem. Also after playing around I seem to find that Venomous X in push/pull config will cost me 12-15 $ more then SA or DH-14. and single-fan config costs 12 less then SA or DH-14. Both SA or DH-14 will now fit with ripjaws. Sooo which one will be better ? ( I've seen a verry strange review at overclockers3d that SA looses to DH-14 at higher OC's and voltages, although havn't seen any proof of it at any other review site.). So which one is the way to go : Silver Arrow or DH-14 ? ( with their stock fans naturally).

BTW thanks for active participation guys :D.
