I heard once that using a gigabit network card could increase your performance on the net (lower ping). I don't mean a Killer NIC, I mean any old gigabit network card compared to a 10/100 network card. Assuming I was connected directly to my modem, would I see any benefit getting a gigabit network card as opposed to a 100mbit card (lower ping)?

I doubt you'd see any difference. Well, no difference related to the speed of the NIC used.
There could be some differences related to how the NIC handles the traffic, but for generic cards, I doubt you'd see any real difference.

PS Keep in mind that 100 Mbit = 12.5 MB
If your ISP provides you with connection faster than that (which I doubt), you'd want a faster NIC :D

Never heard such a thing really.
The sole reason I would use Gbit over 100Mbit is when LAN is involved. Lots of routers and modems still use a 100Mbit WAN port anyway.

The sole reason I use Gbit is because that's what I have integrated in my motherboard

And yeah, most stuff still uses 100 Mbit ports and I'd guess that is for a reason - it was all that was needed
