Hey guys, wonder if you could help.

I've been playing a lot of Sea Dogs lately, and was wondering if there were any similar, more modern games. I've played it's "sequels" (Pirates of the Caribbean and Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales) and found them to be interesting, but ultimately too different from the original for what I'm after. I have just learned about the sequel to Age of Pirates, which I shall try out ASAP, but I'd still like some suggestions from you guys if you have any!

A "newer" game that is similar in nature which I have also played is Age of Sail II. It's not that "new" though, as it was only released a year after Sea Dogs was released.

there are quite a few games that are in the style of Sea Dogs. there was another called Corsairs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsairs:_Conquest_at_Sea, there's the "recent" remake of Sid Meier's Pirates! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sid_Meier's_Pirates!_(2004_video_game), if you prefer a little trading along with your naval warfare you could try the Anno series, the Port Royale http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Royale:_Gold,_Power_and_Pirates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Royale_2 series and Tortuga: Pirates of the New World. http://www.gamearena.com.au/shop/rentals/title/tortuga-pirates-of-the-new-world/

pirate type games are not very popular.
Personally nothing has topped Sid Meier's Pirates and that game is old now.

It has no widescreen support either.

Ah you want pirate games? Well Age of Sail II doesn't really make you play as a pirate, usually part of an actual navy. Being a "privateer" is the closest you can get I guess. But for a game that is from 2001 it actually has so many details that it would still be enjoyable. I usually name my first ship as "Harpoon" too. :p

If you do get Sid Meier's Pirates, you may also want to get the PH Trainer.
Personally I found the aging part of the game annoying when you want to sail around the seas at your own pace.

Well, it's not the pirating that appeals to me. As it is, I've not hoisted a Jolly Rodger on that game for many years. It's simply the style of game that interests me.

Thank you for the suggestions so far. I will look into them.

Well I highly recommend Age of Sail II. I still remember the missions clearly too. :p
