[WTB][US] Nice laptop

My nephew is looking for a laptop for school. I could just tell him to get a Sony Vaio but eh, their not so great. I'd like him to be able to do more with it. So he's looking to spend maybe 600 at most. Anyone got a laptop better than a new vaio for sale? I'm referring to the 2.5 ghz duo core vaio. Bah forgot the model..
If no one has anything for sale, could you point me to a good laptop? tyvm.

I'd need to get it from someone willing to handle it if the thing shows up dead or fails fast.
None of this "you get what you get nonsense" that seems to be allowing people to sell half garbage hardware, that dies in a month and have no liability. Not looking to spend 50 bucks here after all and I can't let him get ripped off.

A friend's sister got a sick ass i5 mobile acer for like $400 or $500 at walmart within the past 3 months. Not sure whats available in your area, but check out other places than bestbuy, target, officedepor or max. Fry's and Microcenter would be good to check too if they have one in your area.

Screen size isnt the biggest issue as performance is.. I'd like him to be able to game on it..
Of course we don't want anything to small though.. I'd guess at least 15".. idk I'm not a laptop guy.. XD
I saw the i5 acer but when I booted it at walmart it stalled out, froze up.. Bad sign..lol..
Also took almost a full minute to boot up.
EDIT: just pointing me to a good laptop if I can't find one here would be great.. ty..

Don't trust the laptops at the store for reliability. I used to work there and had customers come in and dick around with them to try to break them on purpose.

That would explain it.. I saw some there that people had ripped the keys off of.. Man some people.

EDIT: My new cpu cooler just came in for my system so I can't respond for like the next hour.. I have to go get qtips and rubbing alcohol to clean my processor and install this lovely scythe mugen 2.

I know it's a little out of spec in some ways, but the warranty along with the price vs. performance will be great.

It's also built off the new Sandy Bridge platform.

the R1s (C2d 1.7ghz) are going dirt cheap right now, the R2s are a little more, but still cheap because the r3 just came out.

dell outlet is out right now, but they get more in daily. IRRC there is a 15-20% off code right now

I have an R1 with an SSD, I get 4:30 of batt life watching HD video from netflix at max brightness, the R2 would be a little less...

wait until the dell outlet gets the R2 version back in stock... there should be a 15-20% off code floating around that would bring it down to $600ish with a 7200rpm drive and 4gb+ of memory
