Thermaltake TR2 RX 750W is an HEC -- Power supply woes . . .

I bought a TR2 RX 750W at microcenter today for $100 (with a $20 MIR). Usually I'd order PSUs on the net, but the PSU was for someone who was in a bit of a rush.

Before I installed it in it's new home I checked and the TR2 RX 750W is an HEC, aka RUBBISH.

I'm a little bit saddened by that, but at least it's easy to return. Faced with the decision to pay some serious arsehole tax at microcenter for a decent power supply, I've convinced my cohort to wait for one to be shipped.

I'm looking for a PSU meeting the following criteria:
-high quality
-reasonably priced
-750W+ (preferably 850W)
-3 or less +12V rails (one is best)
-modular is a big plus!
-available in the USA

The following are the ones I'm considering (ordered by price). Please share your opinions or personal experience with them, or recommend an alternative.
1) Seasonic SS-850HT 850W ATX12V v2.31,EPS12V v2.92 8... - $135 shipped
2) (Seasonic) CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W ATX12V v2.... - $140 shipped - $15 MIR
3) (CWT) CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-850HX 850W ATX12V 2.3 / EP... - $170 shipped -$20 MIR

At this point I guess I'm leaning towards the most expensive one because it's modular but the price hurts my eyes. Help?

Thanks! :rockout:

That said, I can't find a trusted review of the TR2 to confirm it's a good one.

Can you find any XFX Black Edition 750 or 850's for sale? They are also worth buying, as are Enermax Revolution and Galaxy psus if you can find one in your price range.

Hardware Secrets had a review on it. Although it is indeed 80% efficient, it can't pull its labelled wattage of 750W.

Yeah and HEC isn't automatically rubbish. It's a shame though that the good HEC branded PSUs aren't readily available there, while there's a lot of them here (Raptors and Cougars).

Blasphemy

The XFX 750/850W Black Edition PSUs seem to get a lot of praise on the Tom's Hardware forums (I think they're CWT builds) but they're not in stock at newegg and they aren't sold at a reasonable price from any other reputable retailers :(. The 850W Core Edition is available for $126 shipped and it got a good jonnyguru review, but it's not UL listed so I don't know who the OEM is. Sure is ugly too.

I'm quite fond of Enermax but the Galaxy & Revolution ~800W PSUs are also out of stock on newegg . I just found this one which falls within my criteria: ENERMAX NAXN 82+ ENM750AWT 750W ATX12V v2.3 S...
It's not cheap, but it's modular and Enermax quality is exceptional IMO.
EDIT: Upon further inspection the NAXN 82+ 750W is actually just a Sirtec from several years ago . . . At least that rules it out!

Not only that but:
Noise and ripple levels were way above the maximum allowed during tests four and five.
They were around 150mVp-p

I've been mulling over this power supply problem for the last couple hours and I finally figured it out by luck. Directron is selling the XFX Black Edition 850W for $137.98 with $7.16 s/h. I dunno how I missed it before!

Amusingly enough I was also planning to purchase the Scythe Mugen 2 Rev B from Directron so I was able to purchase all my stuff from one store :rockout:.

Thanks Wile E
PS. For the record HEC sucks :p

EDIT: Oh snap the XFX BE 850W just went OOS at Directron. I hope that doesn't mean I'll be getting a cancellation email!

Isn't it also possible that your order was the one that made it go out of stock? ;)

I have little doubt of that.

I got a curious email from Directron:
This email is intended to inform you that on your invoice you have purchased one or more "drop ship" items. These items are marked with "-ds" at the end of the product description on your invoice. This means that the item in question will be shipped directly to you from an affiliate warehouse and may arrive at a different time and date than any other item on your invoice.

I did notice that the PSU had "-ds" at the end of the name on Directron, but I thought it stood for something obvious like "Deist Serbians". Unfortunately "drop ship" means that Directron doesn't control the stock so I may have just been shafted.

EDIT:
I called and confirmed that it was truly OOS. Bahumbug.
