Recently brought a Corsair H60, and am now getting really good stable overclocks on my Q6600, but now have another issue, i'm being held back by my chipset temps.
I'm currently at 3.2ghz i've had it as high as 3.6 but i get temp alarms from my chipset. i've got a temp sensor from my NZXT Sentry LX on the chipset and that temp alarm goes off as well, and shows temps in excess of 75c when i go past 3.4ghz. At 3.2 it runs nicely at 60c.

I have an Asus P5b Deluxe Wifi / AP motherboard...

But the chipset has that big heatpipe coming off of it. I was originally just going to buy a chipset blocks with a fan on, but my friend reckons that the bit at the back by the i/o ports will have voltage regulators under it.

Any suggestions on cooling ideas?

I would set a fan to blow on the MOSFET heatsink (the one closest to the I/O panel). That will directly cool the power circuitry, and through the heatpipe cool the chipset.

Cool! I'll take it off and try that.

that and put a fan blowing across it, should help a bit.

I tried that with the fan pictured that came with my board but didn't make much difference.

I've got the fan but because the radiator is on back of case it won't clip onto it, theres not enough clearance in front of the radiator on my h60.

Can't really tell on that image, but it won't clip on, and if i try and clip it on first then mount radiator it just knocks it off.

I would guess at this point you could buy a cheap ram cooler and use the top somehow, or just strip it for the 40mm/60mm fans. Seems it is very tight in there and I know a 80mm/120mm is gonna look really funny in there.

I thought about attaching a fan but wasn't sure if it would make any difference as its not fins on the top just a solid plate??

Sorry to be stupid but what's "mosftet" and what is the "CPU power componentry"?

I mean add it to the radiator section over the PWM;)

Further on what you asked erocker....the area under the fins. That setup uses a heatpipe from the NB chip to move heat to the fins. If you cool the fins, you essentially cool the NB;)

use tape or some light glue!

try a repaste though it makes world of difference

Remove the stupid plate that says "ASUS" on top of the chipset cooler. Then place a small fan on it, preferably of the same size as the cooler. I recommend Noiseblocker little fans. They are absolutely silent even on max RPM. I'm using one 40x40 on my Rampage II Gene chipset (i just attached it with 2 screws between existing cooler fins.

In your case and mobo, my advice will be easy to make and should be pretty effective. And with minimal extra cost.

There is no reason to modify the cooler. The northbridge is heatpiped to the MOSFET heatsink, and a fan on that will cool both the MOSFETs and northbridge without a problem. He'll probably snap the heatpipe before he takes off the ASUS plate.

most of the ones I'v seen are just attached with double sided tape...

or get creative and mod it like i did, take off the n/b heatpipe assembly get a mossfet heatsink and watercool the n/b. worked great on the p5q that i modded, was able to get about 4.3 stable with a 9650. needed lots of n/b volt's and caused alot of heat.

edit: used a mossfet heatsink of an old asus rampage mobo that i had laying around that was dead. and south bridge if u look closely u will see the rog logo.

So, i've tried what some people said and have re applied proper thermal compound under heatsink, and have moved a small fan so it blows air through the chipset block. and my chipset temps have dropeed about 8c for now!!!

Thanks.

bit concerned on trying water cooling where its not pre built and sealed (at the min) next rig maybe!

I think you will get much lower temps the other way around if you can pull that off. There is very little surface area on the chipset block to dissipate heat. Don't be afraid to get creative with zip ties and the like!
