Advice on gaming laptop - $2,000 budget

Hey all,

I'm looking for a nice gaming budget and need some advice.

I want something that can handle games like Rift, BF3, etc with decent setting and I have a $2,000 budget.

I would like something with at least 1TB of space, and 4GB of memory. I don't know much about mobile graphics...

I'm a big fan of ASUS as I have an Eee PC, and was considering the follow model:

How would this fair for gaming? Does anyone own this model or similar that can give me some advice and help push me in the correct direction?

I'd look at something like this model from MSI:

MSI GT683R-242US Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.0...

For the price, you're losing the screen size, but gaining a LOT more in terms of hardware.

if you want to have a chance at BF3 you will need a 485m, or a 6970. Probably an SLI/CF setup. Both are about the same speed as a desktop 460 gtx card....



as of right now, those are the 2 fastest mobile cards available...


IRRC your options are the alienware m18x, or a sager something for an SLI/cf setup.

That GT335M is not exactly great when it comes to graphics. My GTX260M is a good bit more powerful and it has a tendency to chug with newer games.

I would go with this myself.

the 460m gets a 3dmark vantage around 8k, its desktop counterpart gets 12k+.... thats a HUGE diffrence

That is definitely the better deal out of all the ones listed by everyone. GTX560M topped all the other GPU laptop people mentioned.
Next on line is the GTX460M of course.

you have to realize that a single 460/560 is only going to get you a 3dmark06 score in the 15-16k range at most.

why? The first gen Icore is overclockable, the new sandybridge is not, unless you buy the $900 extreme CPUs...

yup, 6970m should be much faster than the 560m

the 6970m is essentially the same as a desktop 6850 and the 560m/460m is essentially the same as a gts550 with lower clocks.
