Looking to get a new computer when Vista comes out

I really dont' know much about computers besides the basics. I was looking to buy one through cyberpowerpc.com before several people told me building one would be much cheaper. I really am hesitant about building a computer considering I really dont' have any experience besides plugging in a video card and extra ram.

But after basically just building a pc really quick on cyberpower and comparing prices on newegg, basically just the processor, motherboard, and ram were $800 on newegg while the entire pc was $900 on cyberpower. So is there really that much of a difference or is the savings just minor?

Also, is dell really the only choice for laptops?

But why exactly? I just chose 3 parts of the PC they had and it was almost the same price, and I still would have to buy loads of other parts and an OS and software on top of that, not to mention I also have to build it and very good shot I may screw something up

You will typically end up with a better computer if you are building it yourself. A lot of the items they build with are OEM and at wholesale prices, so that's one reason. You should verify exactly what you are getting before going pre-built. Also, I think you can find some barebones systems on NewEgg.

Dell makes a great laptop. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a Dell Desktop.

If you want to save $100 and get a substandard, frustrating to upgrade, overheating computer, with a 6 month warranty then go ahead and get a Dell. On the plus side I suppose it does show up on your doorstep completely set up and ready to disappoint.

I never intended to get a Dell Desktop, if I got a prebuilt desktop it would be from cyberpowerpc.com
