Does my 8800 Ultra need baking?

I bought an untested 8800 Ultra off eBay to use in my machine was a PhysX card (for teh lulz), but I can't use it. With my 580 in the primary slot and the Ultra in the secondary slot, the 580 loses picture when I boot into Windows. On its own, the Ultra has graphical corruption at the BIOS.

Basically, does my Ultra need baking? If so, how would I go about doing it?

Anyhow, I think I have seen temps for baking GPU's around 180c for 15 mins or so

you dont need a seperate card for physX when you have a GTX580. it has plenty of power for both GFX and physX

Baking only fixes bad soder points, which doesnt sound to be your problem.

Do the nvidia 8000 cards support physX? Thought the 9000 cards were the first(remember hearing the 9600 was good for physX, but can't say I remember hearing the same about any 8000 card).

Yeah the 8800 Series does, well at least my 8800GTS G92 does.

I gotta say though that the 8800 Ultra is one of the most inefficient dedicated physx card you could have picked. Other than lolz I hope you don't actually intend on using it.

I understand what your saying but if you do get it working, the novelty of using it as a PhysX card will wear off real quick when you can do the same with your GTX580 without wasting another 200w, I vote bake it, test it sell it quick lol

Also be careful running that with your 580 man, you have the same PSU as me and I think 2x470's would be a push let alone a 580 and an 8800ultra

yea the PCB isn't regular plastic

should be fine??? not like you can remove them and no one has mentioned them melting when baking a GPU, you need to get the temp right though, am thinking too high and you could possibly start to bake the plastic lol

I would think conventional, if fan general rule of thumb is 10c lower, though thats for pizza's not sure if the same rules apply to GPU's lol

Well, I looked up a guide for it. 200 celsius for 10 minutes. It's cooling off now, will post results when I get around to testing.

I bake mine at 400f 15mins

Holy shit man, I did 200 fahrenheit, which is only 93'c, for 10 minutes

This fix worked after having Starcraft 2 fried my Asus 320mb 8800 GTS and caused it to have blue vertical lines from boot up until windows in safe mode. The culprit is the new 258.96 beta drivers. I followed the instructions in this post and took the heatsink off the card and cleaned off the compound and dust on the chip. After 10 minutes of baking at 200Celcius, I removed the gfx and let it air cool on the kitchen bench for 30 minutes. I replaced everything back together and popped it back into the computer and the lines were gone. The reverted back to 197.45 and it is working better than ever! Starcraft 2 is looking gorgeous!

This is where I got it from. Everyone on that page says 200c.

EDIT: Well, I can't do anything about it for now. There's too much of a gap between the chips and the heatsink, so it'll need cooling pads but I only have thermal compound.

A GTX 580 is powerful enough to handle its own physx. also you would have gotten better physx out of a 9600GT than the 8800 Ultra with alot less power consumption

I baked it withe the GPU pointing down, had the ends propped up to prevent warping.

That 8800 will actually slow down your overall performance. I have seen some tests recently where older cards were tested running PhysX under a gtx 580. The 88XX and 98XX series failed and actually reduced frame rates. Hope this helps.

yup forget physx and go for an old dx9 gaming machine instead. an 8800 ultra setup for all dx9 gaming would be killer.

hope the baking works, gonna try it again with my third gtx 480. it's really close to beign there but still no cigar yet.

My Brother wanted to try out physX for the lulz too.
For the lulz since he was using his GTX280 as a physX card with his GTX480 as primary.

He was disappointed.

In his opinion the performance dropped.
