Then don't do dual fans? He said noise was a concern after all. Personally I'd pay a little more for the latest and greatest. If he decides to go all out platinum micro sells the Archon on both ebay and amazon, but for less on ebay ($78 shipped). I'm guessing cause amazon has a pretty hefty fee.

I understand, but he specifically asked for cheaper options. I can't see not going dual fans when it can make a 5c temp difference.

I gotta suggest D14 here too; I had one, and I miss it, and the C14 I got now just isn't as good.

And...I can get a new one for $50!

At $50, it's a bargain. It's just so damn big, and I think the OP is looking for something that doesn't dominate the board quite as much. Actually, that's the one reason I didn't keep mine. I don't regret switching out. The VX temps are quite similar.

It IS very big, but I do not see that as any issue. It's also got very good ram clearance(mushkin ridgeback and G.Skill RipjawsX fit just fine)

I have haf-x case and booth coolers the H70 and D14, the D14 is a bit better than H70, H70 it's some kind hard to install cuz it make remove my back fan in case and swap it from behind replace it with the other fan coming with H70, but after it all H70 make a good room in case and can put ram sticks with high heat sink or ram cooling, so it's back to u dude.
I see if you take a look on H100.

The H70 is much poorer performing than D14, here with my CPUs, nevermind that the H70 is exponentially louder. H100 might be a good alternative.

Prolimatech Megahalems with push/pull Akasa Apache fans would be my suggestion. Very silent and performance is very similar to stock D14.

Thanks, but that would cost more than a D14. I do like those fans though.

Well I wont be ordering parts for another 3 weeks, but as it stands now I'm leaning towards going with the Venomous X with 1 Akasa Apache fan. As far as I can tell this is a a compromise of a few of the suggestions. Unfortunately due to me having to get the fan and heatsink from two separate stores, them charging a lot for shipping, and Newegg's free shipping on the D14 I only save $20, but that's something. Also... let's face it the fan colors on the D14 look like somebody's grandmas couch.

Thanks everyone.

You're welcome. You'll be happy with the VX. From mounting to performance, it's really a great cooler for the reasonable price, especially with the right fans. Amazon has the F3 fans for $10 a piece, if you're interested in them.

Has the OP stated what case he plans on running? Case is the main priority. Putting a high end heatsink in a case with shitty airflow is just a waste of money

Hyper 212 with two decent PWM fans. Cheaper and less hassle than the D14 / Silver Arrow / Corsair Hydro.

This is an interesting thread.....a ton of 300W coolers get mentioned to only cool 125-150W of CPU power?

Well, I can say that when a 2600k or 2500k is overclocked to 4.5ghz or higher, a high performance cooler is quite justified, as temps can and will reach 70c+ load temps on even the best of the 300w coolers, even with the lack of HT on the 2500k.

:/ I shoulda thought of this earlier... decisions decisions. I'm always happy to actually have enough choices to make a decision though. While I can probably make this quieter than a stock 212 and am willing to sacrifice some cooling for sound it's hard to figure out just how much performance I'm losing by with so many non stock options. Again, thanks for everyone's input

I have to disagree with you paul. I run my 2500K with a 3 heatpipe rocketfish cooler.. The one below and at 4.5Ghz i don't break 65C with IBT. I attribute those amazing temps to my Antec 1200. A great case makes all the difference.

The 212 is a good budget cooler. If you are willing to lose a bit of cooling power on the top end, then it is a good choice, but you will want to replace the fan for sure.

I believe that is a rebadge 212. You are right about the case making a huge difference. Can you do me a favor and do a IBT run on at least very high for 10 cycles, and post a screenie with temps? I don't mind being wrong here, but I'd like to see it.

I was just running my 2600K on some Shagon' AHC-118, and in no mixed words, its poop for a cooler. I have to say it did a fine job, and I wasn't in the 70's at 4.5, and I need almost 1.4V to do even that;)

Haven't met a chip that needed more than 125W of power to do 4.5 GHz...ergo doesn't need that much cooling.

It's possible that I have a couple of chips that run hot on one of the cores. I'd still like to see some screenies of 4.5 on these budget coolers with IBT on very high. Post them up. One of my chips is quite good, and even with the VX, one of my cores reaches 65c. Now prime 95 is a different story, so if that is the standard then I understand. I don't break 60c in prime.

Gelid Tranquillo is a really cheap but amazing cooler for an overclocked 2500k. I built a pc for a friend with one of these in and it handles 4.8Ghz with no problem at all. its quite silent aswell.

definitely worth a look.

I can vouch that it is whisper slient. and cools fairly well

You must not be running the newest version of prime..it gets hotter than IBT does, and I'm IBT'ing with 7.2 GB.

4.5, I'm about 65c, IBT or Prime, with the Noctua NH-C14. the chip that I use in the review rig hits 72c.
