The lesson is: If Microsoft calls, tell them you work for Apple. If they still want to repair your PC it's damn clear they're not from Microsoft.

I mean that right there is so obviously a scam. Not trying to give you a hard time but I can't understand how and why the dude got so damn far with you before "common sense" finally kicked in.

lol... cant believe you thought microsoft actually called you and wanted to access your private information... its a scam, happens here in the UK lots.

We get called like once a week and my girlfriend told the guy she was going to report him to which he said "Just try, we have your phone number and can get your address easy lady... the cops cant do nothing!!!" then he laughed and hung up ;)

Nice

So you run pirated software then. Best not to admit it in public...

That prank caller is a real douchebag. It's not funny and especially not to that extreme. :shadedshu

Yeah prank calls are funny for kids, till they hit the real world and end up in shitty jobs trying to keep their heads above water only to have some little punk making it worse for them. Some prank calls ive heard over the years have been pretty funny, but screwing with people while they working and trying to make a living is shit.

+1 and +1 again, my friend. We're all stressed out enough in our jobs without having people like that making it worse. It can really ruin the victim's day. :shadedshu

This site welcomes everyone from a wide range of technology knowledgeable background.

It takes all types, and I'm glad TPU is diverse enough as it is. Who knows, maybe this thread will help someone who gets the same call tomorrow and goes to goolge and searches it. Techpowerup.com gets pretty high search results for alot of my technical questions and if this thread helps even one person(which it has: Original Poster) then it's worthwhile.

damn skippy, and i also thought TPU was all about learning something new(sometimes in a hurry) and not everyone out their knows what limewire can do(half my friends have had to pass me their pc @1 point or another) never mind a "microsoft tech"lol

But this is on the increase my mum got the call last week, luckily id advised her about this before and she shrugged em off, she would have gone with it had i not worded her up tho cos she knows nothing simps  my dads worse

i watched them both hovering the mouse round(the air) trying to control it  for quite a while fore i learned em:roll:

When we got that same phone call the person said they were from Microsoft and that i needed to turn the pc on because there was a problem with it and they needed me to goto some website lol.

I told the person i run linux and work for symantec so my pc is clean then i told him to F off.
I would never let anyone who rang me have access to my pc

got the exact same line, i told the guy your a liar i know my way around a pc thanks, and your not an employer with Microsoft don't waste my time click lol, i got this call i few months back

Scam happen all the time.
Sometimes they can appear quite legit.
Microsoft will never call you other than their sales departments or if you initiated a support request for them to call.

Conversation suggestion :
Caller : Hi, I'm from <vendor> and it looks like your computer is about to be toast.
You : How can I get blood out of my carpet?
Caller : What?
You : You know, lot's of blood on a carpet? What works to get that out, because I think the police are on the way.
Caller : Well I don't really know what you are ...
You : Shit, they're here. Gotta go. Click.

Caller : Hi, I'm from <vendor> and it looks like your computer is about to be toast.

He's like ok I'll just access your pc.....and he did?

It sounds like some version of LogMeIn got installed on your PC. That support.me site is a LogMeIn login. Your PC will certainly have been infected by a trojan by this point. As I've already said twice and others have said too, reformat and reinstall.
