Well I seem to be reading everywhere these days about the actual possibility of external gpu with thunderbolt. What are your thoughts?

I'm specifically talking about thunderbolt technology. Intel may have unleashed a method of adding an external gpu to something like a laptop, at 4x.

Hmmm... I was thinking about the macmini from apple with this graphics card externally:

GIGABYTE ATI Radeon HD6870 1GB DDR5 2DVI/HDMI/2x Mini DisplayPort PCI-Express Video Card GV-R687OC-1GD

The above graphics card is an apple used card.

I want to place a macmini in my living room with a nice external graphics card. Hopefully apple will make some drivers for this.

Why man. For the money you spend on that stuff you could build a better system. Not a trash on Apple mind you.

I'm interested in the macmini. I have another custom built micromobo on my downstairs tv but I really hate to build another one of these machines.

EDIT:

I really can't stand them due to their heat production and the wiremanagement within these cases.

well, . . . . . . the problem is even if you bought a mac mini that supports thunderbolt, what do you plan to use it for, games, media center?

and for apple to support addon cards that you can buy cheaply is not like them.

Media center mainly. Games occasionally.

It is true that Apple tends to get rid of 3rd party products, however, I was planning to use MultiBeast to take care of this. It's basically an application created by tony, the most popular hackintosh solution to date(iBoot, CustomBeast, MultiBeast,Custom DSDTs).

yes it's obviously possible, but not economically feasible. if the goal is specifically to get a mac
media center, then it's not like you have much choice.

imo the price is not worth the machines, but to each their own.

Sean Barry here, first post. Not a gamer, just gathering intell. I was an Apple dude with my first comp, for about 20 years and a few Macs. But then I went over to the dark sid.....Sorry. Been on PCs for 10 or 12 years?
At any rate, I have been mulling over scoring a Mac Mini as the cheapest way to get into Apple again. Plus being able to run some win 7 stuff. The minis have enough of the stuff I want, small, cheapest mac, solid construction, blabla. The graphics are weak? So an EGC might make the MM good enough to do the video I want. Sorry for the ramble, Sean.
