I have recently purchased a second HDD. It's WD Caviar Black 1TB. I use it as my system drive and my old WD RE2 500GB serves as backup drive now.

Problem is that occasionally my PC locks up. For example music player stops playing, and then i can hear HDD spinning up, after few seconds all starts working again.

Is that some kind of power saving feature? If it's a second HDD, then I can understand that, because nothing is using it and it could start spinning only when anti virus software is accessing files on it.

*Power options are set to Maximum Performance
*I don't know which HDD is doing that:confused:
*All my drives and partitions are always listed in My Computer.
*WD software shows that both drives are in perfect condition.

Did you go into "Advanced" and make sure that it's not turning off the HDD? Even on "Maximum Performance" the HDD's are set to turn off after 20 minutes.

Would be very strange if your new HDD is parking when it is active.
I know the new WD 1TB Blacks have WDIDLE3 implemented into them.

When the PC locks up, does the HDD light stay on and continue to stay on afterwards?

No, I will do that now.

I didn't notice , because it all happens pretty fast, and it is hard to catch this lockup if music isn't playing. I will try to look next time. It would be much easier if PC cases had at least 2 HDD LED's.

It is set to 20 minutes, I guess this is the problem. I'll change that and see what happens, thanks for help.
