monitor is no where near the same quality as the imac's and all of that is in a bulky setup with a tower. The imac is all in one.

a similar machine would be
the HP Omni 200xt

similarly equipped you're looking at 900$ which again is a crappier screen than the imac but does have more memory and hard disk space.

so it's not that expensive and that same Imac can be found retail for 1084$ without having to be an educational institution.

to understand how apple can charge what they do for their computers requires a fundemental understanding of how businesses become profitable. apple created their own niche and then worked really hard at the stuff they were good at like a sleek operating system, an awesome looking chasis and witty marketing. nothing like that in the PC market existed before apple decided to make computers sexy. now you see every corporation trying to emulate it. and that kids, is how you become a multi billion dollar organization.

$100 more but 4 times the HDD capacity, hyper-threading, and twice the RAM. Oh, and the added bonus of software that isn't useless in the typical work environment.

I'm sure on volume, educational orders, Lenovo would have no problem matching Apple's price.

listen, im only going to say this one time. the reason why most members of TPU and most computer geeks in general hate apple is because apple made computers sexy. apple took our believed nerd machine and turned it into this beautiful interface that attracts computer illiterates to it by the droves. it is time to face the music. we will never be cool for wanting to overclock our machines and have beast video cards. the sooner we embrace that as a community the sooner we will accept apple's place in this world.

I can see the appeal of Apple. It is dumbed down stupid proof PC'ing. All of the PC vs. Apple arguments also remind me of PC gaming vs. consoles. Apple has convenience on it's side (and charge for it). I think it's nice they saw a price range and made a product for it. This is just one of the reasons that they have a $70+ billion in money.

the hp I posted at the 900$ price point has more ram, a better vga than that lenovo, a faster cpu, and is 200$ less.

forget the apple, that lenovo is overpriced!

That's a good point too, Apple created a strategy that was built upon what people tend to value most, looks. We argue and complain about them from our own perspective because we actually see whats inside the machines, so we look past the aesthetics and see a machine created to rip people off.

But to be honest, they have a brilliant selling platform in our society.

CPU is faster than Apple's, not Lenovos.
Has 2 GiB more RAM than Lenovo, 4 GiB more than Apple.
4 times more HDD capacity than Apple, equal to Lenovo.
Has inferior graphics (Intel HD) to Lenovo (Mobility HD 5650) and Apple (Mobility HD 6750).

Everything else is pretty much equal. Lenovo has an integrated TV tuner though with MCE remote where Apple nor HP do. Lenovo also has a bigger screen than HP (screen size not mentioned on the Apple).

Considering the educational workload, the HP would probably be adequate but the Lenovo is closer to Apple's specs. Lenovo does tend to gouge though.

You got that backwards. Apple invented the personal computer as an appliance. IBM-PC made it an affordable business machine for the masses that's all about productivity.
