I have a neighbour who's stuck on a pentium 3 pc with windows me so nothing is compatible with it any more and he needs something newer. One of my friends recently obtained two pc's from his mum's work so he's keeping the better one and was going to throw out the other one so instead we're just getting it in working order and giving it to my neighbour to be kind. It has a socket 478 pentium 4 2ghz and 256mb ram so we've put in a spare 256mb stick giving it 512mb but it's still a bit on the low side, so i'm looking to see if anyone has a spare 512mb stick or even a 256mb so we can bump it up a bit more. I'm only looking to pay postage or a bit more considering we're only charging him the cost of the new bits we're having as he's a pentioner. If anyone has a faster s478 p4 that they want rid of I wouldn't mind that either

Are you from the UK? I've managed to find a pentium 4 2.5ghz do you think that would be faster than the celeron d?

I have a P4 3.0GHz SL7e4, but no idea what it would cost to ship it to you.

Ah forgot to mention the board only takes up to 533mhz bus speed, sorry. Shipping would take a bit too long as well but thanks for the offer :) I bought a cpu from MKMods a few years ago and it only cost $3 or something small.

Thanks for the offer again but the USA is a bit of a distance and shipping will take ages.

I have a 3.2 Prescott and a 3.2 Northie. Also have 2x1024 of Corsair XMS 3200 CL2.
I am just across the way in Norway tho registered shipping kills me and costs around £30 for me.

Also got 2 Primo 478 MoBo's (whatever the highest chipset was) 1 is an Intel and one Abit both were the PAT capable ones.

Edit: Not sure that RAM is actually DDR may be DDR2...But I know I have some DDR kicking around somewhere will keep digging

I don't know if the difference in frequencies translates to the user as much as say putting in an aftermarket gpu and as much ram as can fit,or maybe even RAID 0 a pair of drives...
your welcome either way though (S.E. UK)
ME is pretty crap IIRC,i got an XP home disk sp3 and COA you can have to help the perception of increased speed.

I'm fairly sure those 3.2ghz's are 800mhz and the max the mobo supports is 533mhz. As you say though shipping will probably cost more than i'm wanting to spend but thanks anyway :)

Well i've been offered a p4 2.5ghz and 256mb ram on another forum for £2 + postage so it should work out at less than £5 if sent in a jiffy bag. I'm guessing you'd want more than that so i'll probably just go with that unless I can get something better :)

Oh and the pc we're pimping up comes with an xp serial key so I won't be needing it. Thanks very much for the offer though.

No problem fella,i'm trying to clear space for more junk  i would only have wanted postage for the cpu (as like i said-i cant say 100% if it works)the only 478 mobo i have here doesn't support 533,only 400.
If your man's computer has an agp/pci-e slot though i'd definitely free up the system ram by filling that slot.
good luck with your endeavours though :toast:

I hope you're not planning to just buy a Pentium 4 and drop it straight into his Pentium III mobo. You need a new motherboard, considering that he may as well just look for a cheap used PC instead.

No of course not. We're scrapping his old pc. One of my friends got a pentium 4 pc handed down to him from his mums work and he was going to trow it out until I suggested we give it to my neighbour. It has a 2ghz p4 atm and 512mb ram so i'm just trying to make it a little better before giving it to him.

I have a 2.53GHz P4 lying around. Or, you could check eBay for the 3.06GHz HyperThreaded model. Usually can be had for between £15-20.

Thanks but I managed to source a p4 2.5ghz and 256mb ram earlier in the week. It's all fitted and working well now so i'll close this thread.
