GTX 590 or Radeon HD 6990

Hmmm, 590 was my original choice but idk if the noise would be too much of a detrimental factor, I'm assuming I wouldn't be bothered by it but does anyone with experience have a comparison for the sound it gives off? Also I'm building this for a school project so I can't spend forever waiting for a 590 to come into stock

If your worried about time, then just get a 6990, and if your worried about PhysX, buy something like a GTX260 for under $100 and use that for PhysX. Hell, a GTS250 would be enough.

Have a GTX 590, love it. Though the HD6990 is a great card as well.

wait for nvidia rumored GTX590 redesign. Going to be called GTX595. Itll have a beefier circuitry design so that it wont blow up in your face

I wouldnt say the GTX590 is that loud. Its easily quieter then the HD6990

I haven't picked out a computer monitor yet so any suggestions on something that isn't overpriced horribly? I haven't had much luck finding monitors above 1080p that aren't insanely overpriced

could get a decent 27incher at 1080p and just make use of Anti aliasing.

If I'm just going to use 1080p why not just use my tv as a monitor? If I could find something with a better resolution than 1080p that doesn't cost me something outrageous I'd be pretty happy.

Besides the noise, power draw and price I find the details irrelevant as they are based on two different architectures which makes it hard to judge via those details alone.

Either way, I don't think you'll mind. But considering you are going gaming on 1080p, 2* 6950s 1GB is the MAX I'd go. Then I'd suggest maybe a cheap e-ips monitor. You could use your TV, but it is less practical and sometimes you could have problems. Like the IPS236V monitor is OK, or something similar. A higher res monitor will probably run you 800$ You could go eyeinfinity setup or 3D setup if you'd like. You could also go for a higher quality IPS monitor, but I don't think that's the best option for you.

ATM I can't find a good deal on the IPS236V, but usually you can find it at 199.99$. If you live near a Microcenter, the ips226v (same thing but 21.5") is at 159.99$

You shouldn't have a problem finding 6950s around 235$ or 240$. $200 - $300,6950

If done right, it would be 480$ GPUs -60$ Mail-In-Rebates + 170(tax)~200$ cheap e-IPS monitor. You could even do 3x 160$ e-ips monitor (+ tax) and be around your budget, but then you might want 6950 2GB instead, and that would cost 510$ and no MIRs... so 510$ GPU + 510$ (tax included) Monitors. If you can afford that, it would be a sick setup though, it isn't much more than your current budget, so I'd expect that you could afford it.

I don't plan on just using a 1080p monitor permanently, I will eventually be upgrading to a higher res monitor however to keep costs down at this time I am using only a 1080p monitor so I am able to spend a premium on my graphics card(s) and my other components.

Who new computer lab time in school could actually be helpful lol

It's funny, over all reviews about GTX590 still some people think to buy it.
Anyway if want extreme quad GPU performance better think of 2X Asus mars II, see our TPU review about it, it's real 2X GTX 580 and with high overlock with great cooling, but price is crazy too, anything else go for 6990

did you read the thread at all? We already jokingly mentioned the ASUS MARS II, and in no way is that card a good buy, unless you are trying to break a world record

I purchased the 6990 first day it was out...
it was to replace my 2yr old 5970.
Returned the 6990 due problems with noise and drivers.

I now own the 590GTX.

Nvidia vs ATI


590GTX is a powerful card.
590GTX is MUCH quieter than the 6990 under load.
590GTX drivers are FAR superior to ATI/AMD (flexible, tweak-able, and hassle free).

I do love ATI (will never part with my 5970)...
but, the 590GTX is the better card and has better drivers.

Sadly the only 'killer' for 590GTX right now is price and availability.

TBH, I never really had problems with AMD drivers... and your argument of 590 is a powerful card... well guess what, so is the 6990

The only point is that the 6990 is louder, but TBH, it isn't unbearable to my friend that has it, nor is it to me when I'm over at his house. I've never heard the 590's noise level though. If he will be wearing headphones, I can't see it as a problem.

Either way, I think that 6950s are the way to go for him, 2GB if he has plans to do over 1080p.

The GTX 590 at max fan speed is for the most part very quiet, I am running the EVGA Classified version.

Though, if I were in the market for a GPU at the moment with that kind of cash, I would be waiting to see what ATI drops in December, or what the GTX 595 does. There's a reason why there not putting out that many GTX 590s, relatively poor overclocking performance has lead to them being very cautious with production runs.

I am looking to run either multiple large 1080p monitors or shell out alot of cash for a 27" - 32" 2560x1600 monitor,I also have not tried eyefinity, I am an avid gamer and I want this rig to be what replaces my PS3 when Sony/Microsoft roll out new consoles and even with the parts I already have and am planning on buying their are still going to be 2-3 thousand dollars of upgrading I want to do in the future if not more, I also might be looking to do Gamebattles for FPS such as Call of Duty so peak performance is essential, I will also be having friends do HD video editing on it and they also might be over to participate in GameBattles.

My Three biggest questions as of right now are:
What are the benefits of a Radeon HD 6990 versus those of 2 6950's disregarding the cost. ( I have mostly ruled out Nvidia)
If I were to do 2, 2GB 6950's in Crossfire would a HAF X with a complete fan set handle the cooling efficiently?
How noticeable is the increase in resolution above 1080p? Is it worth the cost or would running 2-3 large 1080p monitors be better?


Edit: I really am under the impression that noise will be irrelevant to me and I cannot wait until new cards are rolled out, nor do I want to since the project I am doing this for is due December 7.
