Help with ideas for a cpu cooler

ok guys i'm not going with the i7 990x just yet, as some of you may have read that i was going to get
( some reasons far to expensive plus they have bumped the price up 70 bucks and i have my eyes on the 2011 cpu as a future buy )

so i need some advice on what heatsink to buy for my current rig

my machine:
well it's a i7 920
3gb corsair dominator xmp 1600mhz
gigabyte 5870 graphics card
ax 850 watt psu

so why don't i use the cooler that came with the i7 920?

well i'm pretty sure that i bent the motherboard the last time i put the thing on, and that's why i had problems with the psu making pop noises,
so i might take the fan off and bin the stock cooler


my preferences ?

well i don't intend to overclock much, so i don't need watercooling so that 's not a suggestion i need,

as my name suggests i love emulators, so i need to tickle a bit more speed out of my cpu maybe taking it up to 3 ghz

noise :
well i like my pc quiet so it need to be a fairly silent cooler

ease fitting it: hm well i need it to be reasonably easy to fit (in other words something i don't need a phd in science for )

please give reasons why you think your suggestion would be the easiest to fit, what weight it is and so on

3Ghz on a 920 can be done with stock voltage in most cases. Save your money.

For the board bending issue, Just apply the heatsink with the board out of the case next time.

As far as noise, well its the stock cooler so its not the quietest around.

i did do it out of the case, on my desktop but i still had problems that got that bad i had to change the board and the psu

still i need advice on which cooler to buy money isn't really a big deal but obviously the cheaper the better

also i might still buy the i7 990 extreme chip, so it will also be a cooler that has to be good enough for that aswell

I say go with your gut and wait it out until Intel gets out there SB-E, ain't too far now that BD aint far either. I'd say Dec/Jan. Or even consider getting a BD if the price/performance is good enough. That's what I always go for.
As for the cooler, I'd say get a CoolerMaster Hyper212+ or if you don't care about budget but want the most quiet setup + cool temps on air? Then get yourself a Noctua NH-D14. Either cooler you get, I'm sure that 920 can be taken to at least 3.7-3.8

Hyper 212+! You can not go wrong with this. Try ebuyer and aria too, they sometimes offer better deals.

I would vote for Noctua too, but its too heavy if mobo bending is an issue.

thanks i've just been looking at this review and although that noctura looks the dogs danglies i don't think my memory would fit (i do have 3gb corsair dominator xmp 1600mhz which i'm sure wouldn't fit under it
i know what you mean about bending, but i did have crazy plans on how i'd secure the cooler with a spring of some kind

Depending on the case used, the big "problem" is needing to remove the motherboard from the case. The one's i linked above are all rather easy to install, just take your time because if you're rushed to get it working might have it not seating properly. The easiest of them would be the CM 212+.

All of those are bolt-through IIRC. No pushpins.

Take Panther's offer. They are good and very easy to install.

Oops - I pm'd you but just now saw you are in the UK so that is out. I would just take the pins out of a stock cooler and bolt the hsf on properly.

Sounds like you are going to upgrade sometime in the future...just bolt the stock hsf on for the time being. When you decide on the 990X you will get a decent cooler with it and it will suffice for your needs if not heavily overclocking.

I would go with something big and quiet if you must go air. I hear the NZXT Havik 140mm cooler is pro. If you must have something that is smaller, go with the hyper 212.

Why exactly are you against using a closed loop water system? They are quiet, easy as hell to install, and super effective. I used the H70 for quite a while and it was great. I hear the new H80 and H100 are fantastic.

I have no idea how easy it would be to fit it. That totally depends on your case.

Installing air coolers is exceedingly easy though. You install a back plate, then the mounting hardware on the top, the TIM, then pop the block down and secure the fans. That's really all there is to it.

The coolers fitting depends on the size of your case. Simply review the measurements provided with your case, then look at the measurements of the cooler.

As for the second hand gear: the water loops are closed loops and there's really nothing that could be wrong with them. There's no performance difference buying one second hand and Corsair honors their stuff with no questions. If you ever have problems they will straight up send you a brand new one, and probably a newer model because they dont make H50 and H70 anymore.

i have a bank card for paying for things just that i haven't set up a paypal account yet, as we are in the process of moving home within the next month

You know you can pay someone via paypal without a paypal account if you have a debit/credit card? They just have to send you a request or a form and you can opt out and pay with card.

A lot of my signups pay that way when leasing servers.
