I'm a system builder who does quite a bit of gaming, and I haven't even touched overclocking - but recently I've been getting interested in overclocking. I want to build a system with BIG overclocking potential, so I've come here for some advice.

So here are some questions:

Firstly - processor. I don't want to spend on a 990X, but I have a few options.

Bulldozer is a disappointment - I wanted it to beat Intel, but Sandy Bridge is a little bit too incredible. Something I have heard is that the FX 8xxx series has overclocking chops. Or, I could just go with the Intel K chips. I don't want to break my back spending on this system, but it is going to be watercooled. The overclocks I want are about 4.7 to 5.3, so not crazy high, but higher than standard air cooling OCing.

With the graphics card, I don't want it watercooled because man, replacing the cooler can be dangerous stuff. And dangerous stuff I don't like. I think it'll be the GTX 560/ti directCU II OR a twin frozr GTX 560/ti. To be honest, I think I'll use MSI because they have great coolers and their afterburner is sooooo good (I've used it before).

Cooler is going to be a Corsair Hxx series.

Motherboard is a hard choice - I am thinking about three options. The Maximus IV Extreme, Sabertooth P67, MSI Z68a GDxx or Asrock Z68 Extremex motherboards are my options. I preferably would want a motherboard with an on/off switch on board.

The case is the Corsair 600T. I already use it but this time I'm getting the white edition. Its just such a good case.

8gigs of ram, as usual. I will have an SSD as boot drive, and HDD for data.

I might of left something out - but anyway, thank you for all the people that give me answers. Cheers

How much do you want to spend on the board? Intel 2500K if just gmaing, FTW.

Overclocking is easy on 1155. Too easy. Get a fairly decent board, but even some of the more affordable options clock just as well.

Your clock goals may be a bit too high for SB. Very random results of what you'll get...

lol, I can get what you are saying. I also want to overclock my GPU as well, thus explaining why I'm choosing an MSI GPU. Afterburner FTW

So what CPU can you recommend for high overclocking? (4.6-5.3 ghz)

Afterburner works on other cards you know, not just MSI cards. I could use Afterburner to overclock my XFX 6970s but i dont bother cuz theres no need to

Yep, but the reason I like MSI GPUs is because of their awesome cooling.

Hard to say. It seems the 2600K are a bit better for multis; I haven't heard of anyone stuck @ 4.3 GHz on a 2600K, but 2500K, I have.

2500K can be good, it just seems that you want to avoid the "Costa Rica" chips.

I wish I could give you a more definite answer than that on what's better, but these chips, they are just so bloody random...

The Sandy Bridge drama is that you have no batch/stepping to choose for overclocking (E8400 E0 anyone?).
Most of the chips do ~ 4.6GHz->4.8GHz.
The best i can do for you is, tell you to wait for the 2700k (i know, it will be like 10-20$ more expensive than 2600k) but i remember reading in the news that Intel will make a selection of 2600k chips that can handle high multis (52+) and sell them as 2700k for enthusiasts.

But with 2500k/2600K your luck in getting one of those golden chips is like 4-6%.
