Modern Warfare 3 breaks pre-order records, Black Ops sells 20 million expansion packs

In case we’d forgotten how mind numbingly huge Call of Duty is, last night’s Activision earnings call dropped some massive sales figures to jog our memories. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg announced that Modern Warfare 3 “drove the largest day one shipments in our history and in the industry’s history.”

That follows the fact that “Pre-orders for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 outpaced pre-orders for Call of Duty: Black Ops by a wide margin, setting a new industry record in making it the most pre-ordered game of all time.”

The continued success of Black Ops is even more surprising. On the same call, Activision last night revealed that they’ve 20 million Black Ops expansion packs, at £11.50 each. That’s a cool £230 million in sales. “The revenues generated from map packs alone would make it the third largest console title of the year,” said Hirshberg.

Activision announce that they made $148 million this year between July and September, up from $51 million last year. There was no mention in the conference call of enormous money hats or swimming pools filled with gold bullion, but Activision did announce that they plan to make more money next year, with even more map packs for Modern Warfare 3. Now I have to go and grab a cup of tea and stop trying to imagine what $148 million looks like in dollar bill form.

I can't believe that they're going with a yearly release with this series. Unless they've been secretly developing a new engine, you can expect the same next year.

They announced it, so it gets reported. Ask Activision to stop releasing a new game every year so that sites can stop talking about it every year.

who cares? sells record breaking numbers. Game sells because of its name and half the people that buy it are parents buying it for their 12 year olds.

I'm pretty sure the worlds attention span is short enough that they could get away with a new release every six months. Why even bother with map packs and crap like that?

I know it's much repeated, but Activision takes another doody every year this time of year. It's Bobby Kotick's way of trying to lose weight.

Well I guess his request worked, because MW3 score is up to 88. Lowest metascore critic is 70, but I think he's spot on.

"Modern Warfare 3 doesn't reinvent gunpowder, but sticks to the recipe of the previous games in the series. With a decent story and good multiplayer it's a game worth playing, but the lack of willingness to add improvements in gameplay show a laziness often found in a complacent game series. "

77 - 88 is websites and reviewer score... which *some* probably got paid to do the reviews or the sponsorship for their websites is taken down... lol...

the low score is by user review which is us, original people who buy this game and reviewed it unbiasedly.... :rockout:

By "original people" you mean accounts created by people never paid for or even played the game.

Did you know that in 2009, the world's most influential person is moot?

So CoD turned into what EA was doing with NBA/NHL/FIFA series. Every year, updated graphics, new names, new year number and a nice package with a full price tag. Except they are charging 60 EUR for CoD. Are they nuts!? And they want to sell it to us every year. We should all just sell one kidney (we don't need two right) and dedicate it for games only...

They will get away with it as people will buy it. It would be stupid of them NOT to milk the cow.

Not even that. MW3 was in most peoples eyes a step down in Aesthetic Quality from Black Ops. It has been running the same engine since I believe CoD2 with minimal alterations. CoD4 and MW3 looks pretty damn similar, and I bet you could mod CoD4 to look better.

which means you can make mw3 look better.

it doesnt really matter though, modding + multiplay is not a winning combo.

I'm worried that the same is being done with Starcraft. An expac per year, minimal changes, same engine. SOUND FAMILIAR? I bet the SC2 expac is full priced too. I'm beginning to dislike Activision.
