I like senstionalistic news and over-the-top commentary and opinions. It makes for fun threads.
Qubit's threads are well written and while they are not what we are used to reading on TPU, do we take ourselves so seriously that we can't have some fun ... especially when we can join in the fun in the threads?

No offense to anyone, especially you Erocker as you've always been there when I needed help and came forward to help with my contests. You will always have my respect (even if you won't drive the two measly hours to come party with me).

I may just be an old nutjob, but what you see is what you get.
For better or worse.
In sickness and in health.
For richer or poorer.
'Til death do us part.

Either way (and ive mentioned this in one of qubits other articles) people should NOT be bashing him in the thread.

Isnt that basically what Bta said on page 1 post 1?

I suppose my post is coming off that way and I apoligize. My intent is not to bash someone, but point out my views on the news and how it is presented.

That is where I feel it should be taken to PM and not posted in a thread. Just my $0.02.

No. PM's don't work in this regard and this is what this thread is for.

This thread yes. Im talking about posting the negative feedback in qubits news posts. Instead of posting them there, that is where the PM system needs to come in.

Apparently this practice of sensationalizing news and injecting lame opinion into news is okay to do here, so I'm just going to stay out from now on as well. I mean really, is this what you want Btarunr? From what I gather you are the head of this news department and your news posts seem to be to the point and void of unecessary opinion. Why the change with the new guy? DO you really think it brings in more people? I can see the extra news stories posted on weekends and such without the unecessary opinon bringing in people as well. If I have to roll my eyes any more at some of the "news" being produced here I'm afraid my eyes will give out and I won't be able to read at all. :(

I have to agree...But some of these articles have lured me over here from GN....But seriously, what's that saying?...

I have and always will enjoy BTA's articles...I log into the front page to read em...

I'll just say this....Qubit's articles are either good because they need an opinion as they are simply that type of article or they are completely annoying because I feel the end user should form their own opinion and just be given the facts...

I do think he has been doing a good job at finding the right type of articles for his style at least 70% of the time.

I think it is OK as long as there is a clear distinction between editorials and news. Maybe they could be bundled so that there is a straight forward news story to begin with and then another trailing article / editorial (like in news papers where the left page is the news and to the right there is an editorial).

I want to get the news and then get entertained by some good writing!

Couldn't agree more erocker. I've always thought bta has done an excellent job of the news, but now reading some of qubit's posts I find myself shaking my head and wondering why I still come to TPU.

Compare this newspost

http://www.techpowerup.com/156123/A...illion-LESS-Transistors-Than-It-Thought-.html

to the source article. Anand takes a pretty neutral stance on the issue, AMD PR gave him a wrong number, it doesn't make any difference performance-wise or power-wise, so the end user shouldn't really care about it, but here's an interesting graph on transistor densities of recent CPUs. Heck he doesn't even make it a main news post, it only shows up in his "pipeline" area on the site.

qubit throws in things like "it now turns out that AMD didn't even know how many transistors they have!" or "to add to this tale of fail", and of course has to remind everyone about how much Bulldozer sucks, and how he can't believe it's selling well.

I was actually to the point where I was going to send a PM to W1zzard but then thankfully I found this thread instead.

Great thing is, W1z and Bta like how quibit delivers his news. So complaining to them wont matter.

It's not like that at all. We're watchful about qubit, and will accept constructive criticism, most of the feedback we got in this thread is already being implemented, qubit will gradually emerge out of this a better newsie. There's a lot of energy, we just want the right combination of fact and creativity to tap it with.

It's just that we won't bother with "I don't like his face" criticism. That's not to say that all the criticism he got is of that kind, but some of it seems to be.

I used to get an awful lot of it, with news threads being totally trashed with it. :shadedshu

However, it's waay less nowadays with only a few personal attacks like that and I think a big part of it are our mods doing a fantastic job of cracking down on it and keeping the thread on topic. :respect:

I'm glad to hear you guys are listening. I like some of qubit's news posts, a couple recent ones come to mind:

http://www.techpowerup.com/156090/HDD-Parts-Shortage-Lessens-HDD-Prices-To-Drop-.html

http://www.techpowerup.com/156101/R...uantum-Computer-Enthusiast-s-Best-Friend.html

but any time he writes an article where he seems to have strong opinions on the subject matter (AMD/Intel and game publishers/DRM come to mind) the articles drive me crazy. I think even if you do share his views the spin is having a negative effect, because then instead of thoughtful discussion you get threads where 90% of the posts are things like "LOL AMD FAIL!!!1" like this one:

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156123

I like coming here for news. You guys find things fast, post info from all over the net (The "today's reviews" section is fantastic and I can't think of a site that does it better than this one) and even have interesting tidbits that are still tech related but not narrowly focused on computer hardware like qubit's qubit article above. Stuff like the latest Catalyst hotfix, or new PWM fans from Noctua are interesting enough (at least to me) that they don't need any creative writing in the mix.

Injecting opinion into news makes it something other than news. Bringing in people to the website is a good thing last I checked. Obviously people do care. I don't think they are frustrated but more disappointed.

Because news is a frontpage item for TPU and opinions about the site can be formed upon those articles, especially for new readers. If a sensationalized Fox News Channel worthy editorial errr... news post is one of the first things they see, it could form an unwarranted opinion based on one newswriter.

I must be old school in that when I think of the word "news," I think about getting facts, not being overrun by the writer's opinion. That's what editorials are for. I never meant any of my posts to be personal. Qubit could be a cool guy to have beers with; I just don't care for his presentation of news.

Qubit has gotten better, but I'm still not a fan. I just can't be bothered with saying anything (except the random snarky "yeah 'news' lol"). This go against my promise to him that I would tell him when the news are editorial and not news. I'm a turncoat. On myself. :(

imho all news is good, its sumat to read and i dont mind the person giving the news haveing a slant or not i just think that the actual news bit should be informative only, then the thread will naturally involve some bias or other but all in ive no beef with any of TPU's news or news providers i just wouldnt mind more obv as more is more.

Ok, i guess fair enough, id like to add though i think it would be hard to find any news anywhere that doesnt have some kinda of slant in some way.

I should butt out of this, sorry.

Duh - of course! Most news stories have some sort of bias, but most are very subtle about it and try to BS the reader into seeming neutral.

To everyone: mine is upfront and obvious and gets people interested in the story and talking about it. Personally, I love reading news written in this style and is why I naturally gravitate towards it.

As I've pointed out before: think how many sites report news in near enough the same bland allegedly 'neutral' style? Just about all of them - AND IT'S F* BORING! :banghead: Here, I bring something different to TPU. Something provocative and interesting which gets people talking in the forums. Even long time members that hardly ever post on TPU, having 5 or less posts to their names, tend to post; that's just awesome and I thank you guys. Just look at my two AMD threads this weekend - well over 100 posts each and counting! This is great for the site, as it brings traffic and dollars, helping to keep TPU financially healthy and gives us all great discussions - me included, as I love joining in with the conversations in my news threads. :D

My style may not be to everyone's liking (clearly! lol) and I'm sorry about that, but hey, there's too many different types of personalities in the world to be able to please them all using one style, as much as I would like to. Regardless, all of you rock :rockout: every last one, even those that have called for my head on a plate over my writing style... come on, let us together make TPU ever greater!

You might want to check out my new article that I've just posted, The Increasing Power Of The Pirate Party...

1. The use of the term "M$". It's horrible.

2. It feels like the Microsoft/Apple hate has gotten a bit hotter lately. I blame qubit and his news post.

3. I almost don't even want to come here anymore. It's the same stuff over and over again with increased levels of FUD, both from an increased rate of newcomers and again, qubit news.

Ah, blame the qubit.

As you like to take a pop at the news team and me in particular and if you really are childish enough to want to "leave" over any particular news poster then feel free, I'm not stopping you that's for sure. Bye.

I happen to agree about 'M$' being an overused cliche though and I never use it.

No no I would never leave because of one guy. That would be retarded. I just hate what you bring: FUD, flames and shitstorms from myself and others. The problem is that it feels like it infects the rest of the forums. Maybe it's just me, but this place just doesn't seem as friendly as it once was.

Well, I'm glad you're not leaving and I do mean that. :toast:

I do not bring fud. For example, if you think reporting about that awful Microsoft Metro contract the other day, was fud, then you have no idea what fud is. They wrote the contract, not me. I'm simply the messenger here, so feel free to shoot me, lol.

And yes, I do tend to pick some of the more controversial subjects to report on. They have a dual function of making the site as a whole more interesting and compelling, which brings in page views and more money to keep this site alive and healthy and also to alert our members of the shit that these companies throw at us. And no, I won't report an injustice in a boring, bland "neutral" way, either. If people don't agree with what I have to say, then fine, I'm good with that; we're all different. Once again, I have to recommend www.techdirt.com for really outing these corporate abuses. They seem to be able to uncover and out this stuff like no one else. :rockout:

Going back to our MS example, I would much rather people get upset at MS for pulling this stunt than at me, but if not, then I'm not going to compromise my articles over it just to please a few naysayers that like taking potshots at me.

If members decide to be asshats over my articles, then that's their fault and their problem, not mine.

Oh btw, isn't writing "Fa$ebook" just as irritating?! ;) You won't find me doing that one, either.

And finally, if there's anything that you'd like to see covered, shoot me a PM, I'm always very grateful for all submissions, even in cases where I can't use them. :toast:
