Is this worth the upgrade? qx9650

Hey guys i wonder if you could help shed some light on my current situation.
I currently have a qx9650 @3.95ghz on water on a p5k-e p35 and 2*2gb ddr2 ram at 1066 and a ati5850. This setup has served me well over the last couple of years but im looking to upgrade.
I cannot unfortunately afford to upgrade to i7 so wanted to make the most of my current setup.

I was thinking of upgrading to an asus maximus extreme, it'll cost me around £50 to upgrade, but this motherboard is x38 and also is DDR3, I can swap out the memory at really no cost in fact i can get around £40 for my 2*2gb of ddr and swap out to 2*4gb for the same money so its a no cost upgrade on ebay.

Currently my cpu is hot, although on water, and wont clock much past 4.0ghz without high cpu voltage increments 1.45 i think. I would like to push a little more in benchmarking and for better games.

My questions are £50 i think will be the overall cost so is this worth me doing?
will i see any performance benefits of the ddr3 over the ddr2?
will i be able to get a better stable clock on my cpu?

What's your watercooling setup like? What fans/rad? What pump? Placement of rad?

triple bay rad at top and a water pump, currently gpu is on air this was my old setup so just the cpu with triple bay rad at moment res and the pump.

memory have sat slightly different at mo as i am using 4gb of a friends ddr as i was doing some video editing so speeds are down.

Afraid to say it my friend, you won't have any gains, only the benefit of having newer ram. Now it may be more worth your while to buy the ram & a new board, sell off your current cpu/board/ram, and put that towards a new waterblock and cpu. 2500k + z68 + EK Supreme+2x4GB?

From my Maximus mobo to the GA-P45T-ES3G ( which is cheap board to the max ) was much easier to push to 3.4Ghz ( mobo heatsinks suck )..

So running it at 3.4Ghz as i was with the Max mobo but at 1600 CL8 and getting a bit more extra memory speed from it.

This mobo will not let me select 1T either which pisses me off. My N/B temps went though the roof but solved with a nice fan .

Worth it no even though the idle power usage is around 30w-70w lower and full out about 50w lower usage.

My Max mobo died so i pick the Gigabyte up plainly due to having DDR3. With being courius like you are before my mobo died i do wish i tried it anyways just for the sake of trying it as it does seem more flexable and easier to clock than it was with DDR2 mem modules.

While typing this and even though i have 4HDD and 2 SSD's and a 6970 systems idling at 94w with odd jumps to 125w.

Ah shizer... well i was looking forward to having another play it has been a while... maybe i'll do just that, i'll try the lot on ebay and see what i can get for it then add to it for an i7 etc..
or maybe i'll just leave her be, shes fine for me really, i just suppose i wanted another play.. it's been a while, once you get the bug i suppose it never really leaves you, wonder if i'll still have it when i'm old and grey.

okay im going to bite the bullet, what can i get for around £400, is it worth me upgrading to a core i5 2500k? what board and memory shall i get to go alongside?

about two years ago 2*4850 it actually killed it and made the bench scores 30% less at the time, i got rid of them both and replaced with a 4870x2 til i cooked it

5850 is roughly 6870 performance. If were to go Crossfire on a s775, that would be some bottlenecking there, may not even bother with the 2nd card.

just getting giddy to be honest, but i'm doing it... i should get near £200 for my let so shouldnt be such an expensive upgrade......

should i go for the board MSI Z68A-GD55-G3 or the Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 or is there really not much difference, i am used to asus bios layout etc thats all..

TBH i dont know much about the SB boards coz i dont own one but generally speaking asus is good. Make sure u get a dual pci-e board(id say it u will). I think most of the boards r 8x/8x which is decent. I would look forward to that type of up grade. Ive got a Q9550 @3.4ghz that i mainly use for light games and internt exploring and all that bs. I would replace my q9550 with an i5 2500k too if really wanted to but really dont see the point.
