Dolby Digital True HD and DTS HD Masters has little to do with 7.1 - Infact those formats are often 5.1 too, the difference is in the sound quality!

Dolby Digital: 320kbit/s - 640kbit/s, 48KHz/16-bit, compressed
Dolby True HD: 18 Mbit/s, 96 kHz/24-bit, lossless

DTS: 754.5 kbit/s - 1509kbit/s, 96 kHz/24-bit, compressed
DTS Master : 24.5 Mbit/s, 196 kHz/24 bit, lossless

That's exactly what I'm after xD

I have a few options at the moment but it's going to take time to decide which one I'm to go for!
I will wait for a month or two before I pick the one I really want!!

I really would not buy a receiver over a Yamaha just because it uses Audyssey, the version built into receivers is pretty shit tbh, no better than ypao.

I recently demo'd a Yamaha 1067 receiver (Aventage 1000 in US) and a Denon 2311, i found both needed adjusting from what they settled on, and both sounded much better with their room correction disabled.

I wouldn't choose a receiver for that feature, I deal with it myself on what sounds best to my ears! I don't need a program to do it for me. It's nice to have that option though!

I will go with what ever has the most useful features while keeping the price tag as low s possible!

i'm sorry but I don't live in a Fiberglass prison like Magneto. I need acoustic treatment and digital room correction.

At the moment I have been eyeing up the Onkyo TX-nr609.
It has very good reviews and has everything that I want in a receiver! It will cost me 400 Euro to buy it but I think it's worth saving up the extra cash and getting it.

I don't see anything wrong with that receiver. Has anyone got anything to say about it?

Nothing much wrong with that one. Techrader gave it 5/5 and reevo (customer reviews) gave it an average of 9.5/10

What you like isnt necessarily what the OP Wants. OP just wants to output the HD standards. " acoustic treatment and digital room correction" isnt in his list of requirements unless I misread something?

hi-fi Bookshelf 5.1 setup but with a 10" Vibe Subwoofer.

So one reason I want to upgrade is for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD master and LPCM audio for the computer and for Blu-ray movies using the PS3.

Your requirements are very very very basic. You don't need anything fancy to output DD True HD and DTS-HD Masters. You don't need to spend a lot of money to achieve that either.

ONKYO TXSR309 £169.99

Now if you have 400 Euro laying about and the recession isnt effecting you get the Onkyo TX-nr609, because its ace. But I'm a bit more humble with my money lol

I'd go for it if i were you, Onkyo's 6xx series have always been very good, and this years model got some very good reviews, and that seems a good price (though euro prices are a little alien to me)

I have last years model and it is a good one to go for considering price and options on the unit, Which why i wished i had waited as it has the ethernet and USB connections on it although i got mine for $350.

I notice it has a analogue pc input, do you just input the front l/r from your pc and let the amp upscale it? i am using the 6channel input on mine.

Nice amp though, but i don't think i would really want to spend 400 quid.

I have one and have been very happy with it. Works like a charm and easy to set up just the way you like it.

My father bought a cheaper model and faced a proble when trying to connect all the av stuff to it since it didn't all use hdmi.

609 can take in analog or digital and output it from hdmi to my tv, some of the lower ones can't. This is something to consider. It can be easily seen from the back of the manual if a given unit can do it.

@FreedomEclipse: Yea it got great ratings and reviews and have not heard any bad news about it! I don't see why I wouldn't get it now xD

@Dent1: I agree with you on that one, But I want to try and future proof if I can with this and not have to buy a new one within a year or two.
That basic model does the job alright! But I do want a little more than what it has to offer!

@AsRock: Ah that's good news so! I don't know what I could do with the USB slots? What good would come from that?
I like how this product has an Android app for it, I can use my Acer Apad as a controller which would be very nifty!!

tigger: The way I have my computer set up at the moment is using a HDMI cable from the receiver to the GPU to receive picture and a SPDIF cable for audio. It's very simple!
I would love if I could use just one HDMI connection from the receiver to the GPU for audio and video!
I think 400 euro for this receiver is worth every penny!

@Inioch: Ah that's very good! I would use a HDMI connection for everything to make things easier and less cable clutter! I would prefer to stay away from the lower models! I want something very good which this model clearly has more than I wanted!!

You can plug in Media players, phones, Memory sticks, hard drives, basically anything capable of presenting the Receiver with a File-system

My Onkyo Receiver works with my Ipod but since i only just got it that's the only thing i've used it with for now

Hope your experience with whatever receiver you end up buying turns out as good as mine!

the money should always go in the speakers not the receiver. people are more likely to upgrade their receiver a couple times before buying new speakers.

well considering your getting a higher end one then I have i expect it will be

the money should always go in the speakers not the receiver. people are more likely to upgrade their receiver a couple times before buying new speakers.

The receiver he's getting supports 7.1CH 24bit/192hz PCM audio input, and 4K 3D video pass-through, I don't see many new features they'll release in later years that will make it a good idea for him to buy a newer one

Normally he'd upgrade the receiver first, but considering the features of the one he's getting i think there's a good chance it'll actually be the speakers if he ever wants to upgrade

I wouldn't upgrade these just yet!
Perhaps at the end of next year, I may infest in getting some bigger powerful speakers! But at the moment since it's used mainly as computer speakers, I don't need new ones just yet! I only got them a year ago!

I don't have a crystal ball :(

that depends on the speakers. if you invest in speakers that last 10 years then you shouldn't overspend on a receiver because you will probably buy a new one.

Ah you're funny BumbleBee xD
I see where you're coming from though! These speakers do the job just fine for me! I have tested big fancy speakers in shops and the quality coming off them does not inspire me to spend hundreds on them! These ones I have are great performers and continue to get awards as the years go by! Still a good choice!! xD

You don't really need massive speakers, some good smaller ones and a nice active sub connected to the receiver work sweet together.

@tigger: The 10" Vibe home cinema sub that I have is fantastic. it really boosts the BASS and punch feel because of the sub! Without it, they really lack the thump that's disireable :p

@AsRock: Of course you would! Sure you were the one who made me buy them in the end! I never want to get rid of them now xD
