I have to call shenanigans on the Guru 3d review. Here's Why:

Definitely improvements across the board can be seen with the 7970. However, I have to call BS on some stuff. Some of their results are WAY off considering what they're running; especially the 560Ti results.

Notice the 560Ti Sli results:

Now remember they're running an i7 965 overclocked to 3.75. And they achieved 7363 with the Ti's. However, this is where it gets fishy.

The rig that I'm selling in my sig, running an i7 920 with a whopping 28MHz overclock, undervolted @ 1.0v (HT on, turbo off) got 602 points over their result with the Ti's. What gives?
Here is my result. If you're too lazy to click it, my rig @ 2693 MHz scored 7965.
It actually even beat the 7970 by 41 points.

With turbo on, running ~2813 MHz, it actually scored 8450. (Sorry no link, just reformatted and didn't keep it.)

Now sure, that may be with slightly factory OC'd 560Ti's, but it doesn't explain the discrepancy that they're getting --almost 600 points.

I guess I have some magical golden 920 that beats other i7's with over 1GHz less CPU speed. :wtf:

wow, guru3d review shows that overclocking the core to 1050MHz and memory to 5800MHz brought 10% increase in performance, for a modest 10W increase in load power.

Makes me wonder why AMD didn't hit higher clocks in the first place.

Looks like the 7970 is crushing the 580 in crossfire config. I'm guessing the dual gpu card is just going to be two 7970 cores? That is some impressive performance, but not enough to get me to switch yet. There are no real benefits yet for me until I move to a new platform.

I think the price is accurate based on its relative performance, but I wouldn't pay it. $500 should be the ceiling for single GPU cards. I'm expecting a LOT of people to wait until the prices drop on these, as there's no major incentive to upgrade from 69xx cards.

It's all about the bios. AMD has just released a new bios that really unlocks the 7970 potential. Check Legit Review's OC results using the new bios! 1165MHz Core Clock!

Everybody's system behaves differently specifically because of the software and resources being used for the bench at the time.

I can very scores by 1,000-2,000 points by messing around with different operating systems and the resources used for that.

Its weird, Benching programs are not accurate across different platforms, they just are not.

The only way they are accurate past 98-95% is if the same scenario is replicated and performance 100% the same every time. Same operating system/programs/storage/system/memory/motherboard/even OS patch. everything except the drivers.

Wiz does this with his reviews, its the only way to achieve a decent graph.

Everybody has a different setup.

You need results from 2 different motherboards. Either P67/Z67 vs x78 & x58 vs x78. There is no way to determine any potential gain or loss if the PCIe 2.0 results are based on PCIe 3.0 setup. That is no different then me trying to give you Q9650 or E8400 results by downclocking/removing HT from a I7 CPU. We are still trying to compare the difference in technology/arch. used.

Good Thermal Compound does make a difference...

Apparently it makes a difference in:
Lowered Temp
Reduced Fan Noise
Lower Power Consumption

You need results from 2 different motherboards.

Actually, it's not that complicated. Get an ASUS X79 board, and it allows forcing PCIe 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0.

Nevermind that it's x16/x16 for both GPUs, and with that, you are all set.

If testing on 1155, then yeah, but I'm sure some board will offer the same options, too. Not that it matters, since no PCIe controller in retail supports PCIe 3.0, yet. Perhaps the rumoured 1155 chipset refresh will bring the same functionality as the ASUS X79 boards.

Thank you, Captain Obvious. There's no difference because there are no PCIe 3.0 CPUs to enable PCIe 3.0 on the boards that support it. Which means noone has actually tested PCIe 3.0 performance yet, and won't be able to for months, even though there is at least one site who says they have, using a 3960X CPU, which doesn't support more than PCIe 2.0.

Nobody can truly confirm or deny a difference from different PCIe speeds until such CPUs are released. First should be Ivy Bridge, expected in April.

EDIT: There was a reason PCIe 3.0 doesn't work on X79..IT WAS DISABLED BECAUSE IT WAS BROKEN, and was unable to meet PCISIG certification. No results can be claimed as valid, and will widly vary depending on how the BIOS has been hacked to add the functionality to the CPU.

Anandtech claims 9% increase in DirectCompute using "special" BIOS...VR_Zone claims 1%. I claim both are invalid until the current revision SB-E CPUs are PCISIG-certified.
