im looking at getting the asus crosshair v formula and a amd fx 8150 cpu with 16 gb ram.
my question is i have a creative soundblaster x-fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series sound card and i want to know is it better to use the onboard sound or the sound card?

I think this is subjective but I my opinion onboard sound is as good. Although I have some hearing loss. And if you use your HDMI from your GPU and bitstream then its not an issue

Ivy Bridge is highend, there will be a mainstream i5 and performance i7 segment!

It's planned to be upto 20% faster than Sandy Bridge.

In May the AMD Piledriver should be out. Makes sense to skip Bulldozer and get the latest architecture.

Ivy Bridge-E and its predecessor Sandy Bridge-E (LGA 2011) are high-end, Ivy Bridge and its predecessor Sandy Bridge (LGA 1155) aren't. As you have already mentioned, there is a "Performance" (specifically "Premium Performance") segment. But that's not Intel's "high-end", since right now and in the near-future LGA 2011 is their "high-end", or as their road-map says, their "Extreme" segment.




By May, you'll be better off with an i5-3570K ($225) and a $200 Z77 board (same price as the Crosshair V Formula).

Still doesn't make sense, especially after what you said before this statement.

Bulldozer is more or less 15% behind Sandy Bridge. AMD expects a "10% boost" from Piledriver over Bulldozer. Ivy Bridge is expected by Intel to be "up to 20% better" than Sandy Bridge. Do the math.

EDIT: OK, I'll save you the effort.

If SB is 100%, then BD is 85%. PD would be 93.5% while IB, even reducing the optimistic "better" performance, could be at 110%. Since when does getting 93.5% make any sense when the other option would be 110%?

EDIT2: AMD fanboys may be hurt, ok let's make it 10% behind SB. So SB@100%, BD@90%, therefore PD@100% (note that unlike the Intel "expectations", I didn't reduce AMD's expectations), and IB@110%. 100%>110%?

Do your upgrades based on performance and not sympathies with one company or another. Wait and see what Piledriver will bring if you are used to build AMD machines but I really don't think it will be a serious competitor to Ivy Bridge. And don't kid yourself about the better prices of AMD, you pay for what you get.

As for the sound card, it depends what's your output. If you use "PC" "plastic" speakers or cheap headphones the onboard is just fine. If you use hifi equipment, even at entry level, you'll hear the difference.

If you want to get technical about performance. Piledriver is 10% faster than Bulldozer in x86 instructions, but AMD have said in some applications like Digital Media (x64) there will be an upto 30% performance increase.

30% increase is ontop of the NEW B3 Bulldozer stepping which isnt out yet!

I'm not saying to buy Piledriver, I'm just saying wait for the benchmarks so an educated choice can be made. OP is upgrading in May, so benchmarks should be available then.


Anyways the OP has said that Intel costs too much in his country so respect that. If he does not have money for Intel how do you expect him to pay for a Sandybridge build?

hi all its been a wile but i got my crosshair v board next is the memory then cpu. i was looking at these memory Mushkin Enhanced Redline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR... i plan on getting two kits. will this memory work ok on the crosshair v formula? i know its not on the qvl but some have tried g-skill that was not on the qvl and they worked.

Not sure how AMD is with memory compatibility these days, I would sugest 2x8GB to be sure, you may have trouble getting all 4 to ruun at their rated speeds though wait for someone else to chime in

I agree, bad decision on the OPs part. He should have waited until May and went core i5 2xxx or i5 3xxx or waited for Piledriver reviews, even Piledriver is a long wait away. I would get Ivy Bridge personally.

If you REALLY need to upgrade now then a I5-2500K and Z68 board would be the best choice over the Bulldozer.
