Razer's XBOX 360 Controller or Logitech G27?

I hope I'm not in the wrong section, but controllers are hardwares, right? Anyway..

I'm a college student in Asia, and from the last December, I saved only up to Php 3,500 (USD 81.70). And I have 12 US Dollars from my grandmother, which is Php 520 in my country.

So I was on my way to a university when I found a PC store selling a Razer Onza XBOX 360 Controller for PC. I also saw a Logitech G27.

I saw another controller, it's called Razer Hydra Motion Sensing, but I guess I don't need that for my PC games.


***Heres the question: Should I buy the Razer Onza NOW, or should I wait and save more money at the same time, then buy the G27?

Nothing. It's just that I haven't found any standard controller on a local store yet.

Edit: and heck it looks cooler on black and backlit buttons. I also heard the d-pad has been improved. But I'm not sure if any of these are true because I haven't held any XBOX CONTROLLER in MY WHOLE LIFE. yes, sad.

if racing is what your into then def. go for the Logitech if you can afford it, though i'd look around that price seems kinda high. from what i've heard i guess that's how things are over there though.

the other controller seems nice for the price (considering how prices are there). it would do ok for racing games but you'd have a lot more fun with the G27.

I'll put it this way... I drive a Hyundai that has a 5spd... and I drove a car that had similar power with an automatic... I have WAY more fun driving my 5spd lol. i guess you could manually shift with a controller using the bumper buttons... or you could get a wheel kit that only has the paddle shifters if you want to save some money.

Edit: maybe me driving my car isn't the best comparison... I can tell you that i've played racing games with a controller before and i demoed a wheel kit similar to that G27 and i had a lot more fun with the wheel setup.

Actually yes, I am into racing. And I don't know how to use a manual. I drive an Automatic Isuzu Trooper and a Pajero.. so buying a G27 would be like a little leap on knowing the right stuff to do on a manual, and the fun of using a wheel. I'm still searching for the best driving simulator, that would "stall" if I do things wrong on a manual (I just heard that on one of my friends).

So it's like, The reason why I wanted to buy a G27, 80% for games, and the 20% for learning how to use a clutch.

**I know most would say "just get a driving lesson", well our family doesn't own a manual car, and driving lessons here are expensive, there is one which is cheap, but you would only learn a few, not all.

the d-pad is only used for quick slots and navigating menus. if you wanted to be a dick and run emulators on your PC you would run into problems with older games.

I have driven manual shift cars all my life and i can tell you this, a sim will teach you only the basics, mainly because each car has a particular feeling or personality, the amount of pressure the clutch needs, the stiffness of the gearbox, etc. specially in older cars.

About the controller, i started with the 360 controller, now i have a wheel, and use it every time i play a sim. If you really like sim racers, then go buy the G27, you won't regret it.

well most games i've played when using MT setting when you mess up you accelerate very slowly. as for stalling, i've yet to see one do that in game.

as for helping you drive a manual trans... the best i can do to help is tell you to keep the clutch pressed in after you start the car. Then shift it into 1st but keep your clutch in, then SLOWLY let back while giving just enough gas to hear the engine rev a tad more. this should start the car going forward and keep it from stalling. then once your moving at a good clip press the clutch back in and shift to 2nd. give a little more gas while letting off the clutch a little faster than when in first. same with 3rd and so on. as you get comfy with the clutch you can speed up this process. you'll quickly learn that 1st gear is a pain in the ass while the others are pretty easy. reverse is a bit like 1st, although not quite as hard. when it comes to stopping a lot of it has to do with what gear your in as you slow down as to whether or not you need press the clutch in all the way. For coming to a complete stop, you can just press the clutch in and shift it to neutral and let off the clutch while stopping. When starting on a hill you'll want to give a little more gas while starting agian than you would on a level spot, but not a whole lot more. some ppl like to tap the gas fairly quickly while waiting at a stop to accelerate faster once they get going. you'll feel the car start to want to stall if you're not doing it right. don't panic, just press the clutch back in a little and try again.

I've heard GTR 2 has that option for the clutch. but the real thing is better since you need to feel what the car is doing.

a little off topic, when you downshift, you push the clutch all the way, then downshift, then do i need to tap the gas before slowly letting the gas in again? or do i just slowly let the gas in after i have downshifted?

Ohh a fellow kababayan glad to see you here. For the controllers, pads I have tried are modded saturn , ps1/ps2 controllers - usb. And lately a XBOX 360 Controller for Windows it does ok but have only tested those on platformer games and some SSFIV:AE action.

well to answer you:
Downshifting is much like upshifting: off the gas, press the clutch and move to a lower gear and get back on the gas as you let out the clutch. Getting back on the gas quickly is important since downshifting and not touching the gas will slow the car down as the engine compression fights the turning of the wheels ,which is what you want while going down a hill but not when you need to pass somebody.

IF you like racing games, i heard the Onza has small to zero deadzone (which is useful mostly for semi realistic to realistic racing sims). If it wasn't so expensive i would have gotten it, but according to the thread i posted, it seems "cheaply built" even tho its a Razer brand.

Standard Xbox controllers have a large deadzone afaik, and with some software tools can minimize this but apparently not enough (not sure about this).

I still have my logitech rumblepad 2 for (semi sim/sim)racing, has zero deadzone which is perfect for fine tuning the steering (obviously not as perfect as the G27 or any other decent wheels)

Here is my honest take on the wheel VS controller setup as i have both.

The wheel is a lot of fun and makes racing games infinitely better.
The downside is you will likely have to buy/build something to get a comfortable and stable mount for the wheel / pedals.
I have a steel desk like you would find in a machine shop that's the right height,a nice desk chair that tilts like a cars does and a 1ft tall platform with a steeper incline on top to mount the pedals to make it more like a real car and i enjoy it.

But I don't use it.

I use the WIRED 360 controller for everything where a keyboard and mouse don't work right like Dead Space, BF3 Vehicles, Hawx, F1 201x, NFS, Dirt, etc.
Most games now have a default profile for it and it works just like it was on 360.
The Razer is nice but I'm not spending that kind of money on a controller, also don't buy the wireless one the USB adapter is crap on a good day and likes to overdraw USB ports.

i kinda have the same reason, having to set it up lol, and it can only be used on one particular genre (and im not comfy using wheels on arcade racers, had to be a sim racer), but its a must for hardcore racers.

lol same thing with my car, mines a 6speed and the automatics are just b o r i n g, ive played forza for many years, and the controller is basically all i know, but when i head out to frys i have a blast on the wheel. Some have actually taken a real dashboard from various cars and set up around it to make it seem more realistic, awesome idea. Something like this where people go to salvaged yards and get the things need

haha Fry's is actually where i tested out the wheel... they don't keep stuff like that hooked up all the time unfortunately.

I'd like to get a setup where the pedals hang down though... and most setups i find are only 4spd on the manual >.< I guess that'd be fine if i were driving a classic car lol. now if only they could make a digital cluster set that could plug into a computer for the MPH,RPM, etc that'd be awesome! hell maybe even put a blowerfan under the thing and route ductwork to the vents haha

I guess you could just buy a setup pre-built like that... but those are insanely expensive. man i wish i had the money for a triple monitor setup and a custom racing setup. I guess I'll stick to WASD for now. Also, another thing i'm really picky about is how much turning the wheel can do. I think my car does 1.5 turns in each direction... my truck on the other had was like driving a bus lol. (although my friends call it a tank) you had to crank that thing like crazy... but man that thing was fun to drive, even if it was a 3spd auto (i could still manually shift down to 2nd at least)...

No speed demon, but it had its moments. I'm currently looking for an engine for it though. Trying to find another 225slant since the other one was ruined by a shadey mechanic. I plan to convert the other one over to fuel injection. I may even do direct injection if i can figure a way to combine the spark plug and injector into the same space where the stock spark plugs go. I also plan on doing dual exhaust and a mild turbo setup as well... its gonna be a beast when i get done with it lol. Other plans are for an A933 overdrive 4speed manual transmission and a swap of a rearend gears for fuel economy's sake. my end goal is to have a truck that has some durability, yet some get up and go and be reliable for years to come and get about 22mpg hwy... and maybe look good while doing it too lol... maybe take it to a few shows at Year One by the atlanta speedway. Also, maybe a raised air intake, kinda like a snorkel but not soo big. I've had moments where I've been on roads and water decides to make a new river. I drove through part of the floodwaters back in the late 2009 Atlanta, GA floods. It did pretty well in snow too... last 2 years we've had quite a bit... for our area at least. and the city just isn't prepared for it.

haha np, that's what we do here. And as far as downshifting goes, pretty much what psyko12 said. Though the "engine braking" comes in handy downhill and sometimes in bad weather. For me though, when i want to pass someone I usually skip 4th and go straight down to 3rd and floor it, then once i've passed them i'll shift back up, skipping 4th, back to 5th and cruise along. or if i'm in 4th at the time, i may go down to 2nd, and back up. depending on where i'm at. I think i've had it up to 75MPH/120kph in 3rd. (maybe not the best for the trans lol) Also, downshifting while comming to a stop help to quickly take back off if say the light turns green right as your about to stop.

anyway back OT, controllers aren't BAD for racing games, I had a lot of fun playing Need for Speed Underground 2 on my GameCube, I still boot it up from time to time. But if you want more realism then a setup like a G27 is the way to go.

^pro tip - remember transmission parts are more expensive than brake parts, downshift to slow down only when you really need to, use the brakes more and your clutch will last longer. also when downshifting try to rev match and keep the car nsync . my third gear tops out at 91mph! i just hop into 3rd when i need to pass up someone too

yea i actually rarely use the trans for breaking... mostly i downshift comming to a stop/slow down to keep revs to where i can take off faster lol. my biggest prob is the busted trans mount and my alternator is rusted a little due to a bad rad leaking on it.... deer hate my car. my grandfather hit 3. he had a paper route at night. the car has an exhaust leak now so the noise tends to keep em away now lol
