With legacy interfaces such as RS-232 serial obsolete and clearly phased out of PC motherboard standards, those still needing the interface, such as for connecting MODEMs, telecom equipment, robotics, etc., are finding themselves in need of devices such as the TRENDNet TU-S9. Simply put, this is an adapter cable with a USB connector on one side, and a RS-232 9-pin male connector on the other. The cable between the two is about 7 cm long. Operating systems such as Windows 7-thru-98; and Mac OS X 10.1-thru-10.6 are supported. The TU-S9 from TRENDNet is priced at US $12.99.

Aren't there already a million such devices out there?

I am thinking the only thing new here is that they actually have Windows 7 drivers for this one (driver support for the cheapo common ones is rather spotty).

Beware! I bought a similar one from a major brand when Win 7 came out, and they never released drivers to make it work!

My thought exactly. This may be new for TRENDNet, but that's about it. I bought several IOGEAR GUC232A USB to serial adapters (relabeled ATEN UC232A) over a year ago.

I am thinking the only thing new here is that they actually have Windows 7 drivers for this one (driver support for the cheapo common ones is rather spotty).

The IOGEAR/ATEN adapters had Windows 7 x86 & x64 drivers from day 1.

FTDI still make the best adapters, in terms of compatibility, flexibility and driver support.

I'd personally be more interested in a USB-to-DB15 (read: USB to joystick port) adapter that worked across 98SE thru 7 that I could use to connect my beloved Thrustmaster FCS and WCS which only really worked via the DB15 port:

Granted, they made a USB version of just the joystick called the Thrustmaster Top Gun but driver support for it was pretty non-existent especially under Vista/7. -_-

Ladyfox,
who still has both the Top Gun and FCS with the hope that someday she'll be able to use them on something else besides her retro-gaming PC with a Sound Blaster 16 ISA

It's not even new for TRENDnet, we have been distributing this reference for years, the only difference in this version is that TRENDnet is changing the color of this cable, from blue to white.
