You cannot call the Xenos chip's AA "free". It costs near 105 million transistors for that.

that's almost half the GPU

i think the mailman better rethink the 'weak GPU' as an excuse for AA with that many transistors dedicated to AA

if its that much then maybe the Wii U will stay clear of that -150 million transistors and most games don't bother using them

Yeah, the eDRAM die has like 192 pixel processors, and an efficient bus, so while it SEEMS free, it really isn't. It's just a really good hardware design by ATI, from 7 years ago.

i do get the reason though, as the console stays the same and games increase in complexity AA is bound to be traded for Frame rates if its not dedicated

All they did was move the logic off the die. Not what I would call "free". Up the resolution and the console will cry like a bitch. 7 year old tech tends to do that.

as i said it drops back to 2xAA at 1080p cause it was only designed as a 720p console

Because the hardware is weak, and what made it "free", actaully mode it quite costly too.

I mean, when you render @ a set resultion, it's easy to design dedicated hardware for a specific purpose, if all it is doing is processing a set number of samples, and you already know the sample size.

But, if it was truly "free", it would be "free" in all instances, and it's not, because higher resolutions have a performance budget it really wasn't designed for.

Not on a serious note:
Too bad it does not contain a regular DVD drive else you could install Linux on the thing (assuming the Watson CPU is from the PPC arch). Would not make much sense though, to do that (as it wouldn't be a console anymore).

And it was only yesterday that the regular game boy had just come out. I can not wait for this device to come out and people start modding it and hacking it.

WiiU will persumably have a GPU "similar to HD4850" it is a cusom chip based on R700 series of Radeons, the information says it will be 20% slower than then next Xbox which is 6 times faster than X360 that means WiiU will probably be 5 times or more better than X360 knocking down reports of WiiU being "50%" and later "2x" faster than the current generation.

WiiU to be only 20% less powerful than the new "Xbox 720".
http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/01/24/xbox-720-will-be-six-times-as-powerful-as-current-gen

In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.
God please let this be true, i hope it's not IGN's garbage.

Oh and one funny speculation:

Someone a couple posts in has the right idea; Vitality Sensor 2.0

While it seems like a cool idea, I doubt it will work very well, or come cheap. It will need a dedicated processor to do calculations for all those things, if it doesn't it will gimp the crap out of your Wii U. I kind of like the idea of having in-game match the weather and feel of the real world, but I think it kind of takes away from games. It feels like Nintendo is really pushing immersion, but I don't know that everyone wants to feel like they are inside the game. I'd rather they put a better GPU in and avoided all the little gimmicky attachments the Wii had.

If they are using a r770 chip it's most likely an updated one. For example this MSI 4850 doesn't require a 6-pin like the original did.

http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R4850-MD1G-OC.html

That would be stupid if not done.

And it was anyways already confirmed, totally custom chip, die shrink and eyefinity, original HD4800 series did not had eyefinity.

"based on" means only the architecture is the same, so they aren't really having to pay for any costly research, just use the existing cheap stuff, + die shrink helps with cooling and chips per waffer, nintendo has to invest wisely, an agressive die shrink should also make production cheaper.

RUMOR - Wii U to have more than 1 GB of RAM
The same source that has been supposedly leaking Wii U dev kit details recently is back with more rumored info. Thanks to Dim for the heads up!

- Will have more than 1 GB RAM
- based on Rev4 dev kit frame
- amount of RAM is 'quite surprising', but less than 8 GB
