his 7870 advice needed

hi everyone

I want to pick a 7870 for new build and here is the question

what's the difference between his 7870 iceq and his 7870 iceq x turbo?

It's pretty sure about 7870 iceq to be a OTES card while x turbo seems not (correct me if im wrong)

and i have a future plan to crossfire, so the OTES card will be the first choice?

Well, not quite died. The fan is no longer controllable. It sounds as if it is running at ~30% constantly. I cannot adjust it, it no longer whirs up to max speed on boot, it just isn't adjusting itself at all. I tried the CCC, etc etc etc - it's gone. When I load up SC2, it instantly jumps to around ~105 celcius and starts climbing, soooo that's not an option.

So, I guess it's finally time for an upgrade.

I don't play much anymore. I run two monitors at 1920 x 1080, I play SC2, Skyrim, and I'll be picking up D3 when it comes out.

The 4890 did a decent job at 1920, but I figure it's time for an upgrade, so I'd prefer to have something that is superior to the 4890 - but I'd like to keep it at or below $300.

I looked at the 560 Ti 448, which has amazing reviews - but is it worth it? I see them around $250.
But for $30 more, the 570 appears to do better on larger resolutions.
The new ATi cards look to be performing very well, but the 4890 was my first ATi card and I think I'll be going back to EVGA. I had too many random problems with their drivers, and I don't want to bet on that side of the front improving drastically.
Nvidia just released their new cards, but they appear to still be quite pricey.

I'm willing to hold off for a couple weeks to see where the prices go, but I've been out of the loop for a while. Should I play it safe, purchase a 560 ti 448 or a 570 and just move on?

Thanks TPU!

edit: WHOA my info is out of date.

I'm currently running an i7 920 @ 3.5ghz, 6gb ram to pair up with the video card.

Hmm, is this true? I have been out of the loop for a while, but I've been running multi monitors for forever.

Due to work purposes, this will soon be a tri-display setup, so would that change anyone's opinion on the matter?

If that's the case, the 560 TI 2gb would be better suited. It also has the 1x mini hdmi and 2x dvi to use for output to three monitors.

Edit: Apparently you can't utilize all three ports to output to three monitors, can you? So...I suppose my options are more focused on AMD cards now huh? Or SLI, but with this budget I don't think that will work well.

I would say either go with a 570 or go with a Radeon HD 7850 and OC it. The 7850 is more power efficient, but the 570 will be faster without OCing and you won't have to worry about tweaking it, etc.
Either is a good choice in the end. Although with the 7850 you can run an eyefinity setup and add a third monitor.

That third monitor is unfortunately quite important. I'm not very familiar with eyefinity but I will be checking into it now.

I'm a little nervous diving back into AMD's cards after the initial 4890 driver problems I had, but I have read quite a few positive reviews on them so far.

And no, I won't be grabbing that GTX680 :p It looks pretty sweet, but gaming has dropped in priorities a bit, and I'm not quite prepared to dump an extra $200 into it past the budget.

Maybe in a year or two when I build a new PC ;)

Also, what about SLI/CF? Would it be better to get, say, 2x 6870s for $145 a piece or the single 7850? Just throwing thoughts around.

I upgraded to a GTX570 from a HD5850, and it was totally worth it. I didn´t have to many drivers problems with AMD/ATI but Nvidia´s drivers seem to be much better IMO. I did have some issues with AA not working properly with AMD/ATI in some games, now with the GTX570 that´s gone.

While AMD has improved it's drivers quite a bit, Xfire still isn't perfect. The 2X6870s will be faster in any game which does well with Xfire, but some titles *cough batman cough* don't like xfire and you're better off running one card.
However, if your PSU supports it the 2x 6870s will likely be the fastest solution within your price range for the most part.

If you need a card right now, go for 560ti/ti448/570 if you prefer green or 6870/6950/7850 from the red camp. The mid lvl 6xx series are few months away but the wait will be rewarded

If my gpu fan started going bad, I would ge an aftermarket cooler for it asap. That would keep it fron giving up the ghost and keep it alive for it's next mision. A 4890 is woth keeping alive, imo. Then I would get a DX11 card and enjoy the eye candy.

Don't think about it, grab a 7870 and forget upgrading for 3 or more years.

stay away from SLI/CF. the driver woes will be worse than that of HD4890 you say you had.

my vote goes for a single HD7850.

best performance card at 250$ = GTX560 Ti 448 cores but no 3 monitor support.
close performance to the above 260$ = 7850, supports three monitors

If you don't want to bother with Driver problems than stay away from multi-GPU in general.
Driver support for SLI/CF have improve quite a bit but shit do happen once in a while.

why not just OC in CCC to those speeds? I just went to CCC and slid it over all the way. Runs fine for me. See sig.

MSI Lightning is not a reference card. I would have some concerns with flashing its bios to another 7970.
