I don't know if it's good to modify the heatpipe on a cooler like this? anyone tried this?

That is an interesting approach to water cooling. Honestly if you know how to solder copper and can get that small of pipe, it is well worth a shot on a spare cooler.

No, it isn't.

There are coolers that combine heat pipes and water loops, but this isn't one. The Heat pipe has been cut and evacuated. The evacuated tube is being used as a channel for a water loop.

Pro:
Large cooling surface for air transfer at the CPU (radiator can be smaller)
Cheaper than a good CPU water block

Cons:
Prone to leakage
Immense increase in size, little increase in performance
Prone to leakage
Flow restriction for liquid loop
Did I mention a huge chance of leakage?


This is DIY at its worst. A relatively good thought, marred by poor execution and poorer planning. It is an... interesting ... picture though.

Looks rather promising to combine the two technologies.

The strange thing in the picture is the fan between the heat-pipe stacked fins and the GPU card. It's difficult to get air flow moving well going that route. If the heat-pipe cooler was turned 90 degrees to allow the fan to flow better and the LED blue fan behind it, then it would be a smarter build.

Most DIY stuff made from existing hardware tends to last longer and gives OEMs a view into what may take the hobby to the next level.

I wonder if my older VaporChill Micro could be setup like this. It's sleaker and can do the push-pull fan arrangement too. Adding the 1/2-inch ID tubing would be very simple. I really like this DIY concept.

There was a kid here a couple years back that did the same thing to a Zalman 9500. No reason why it wouldn't work better than the cooler with sealed pipes, but due to the diameter and flow restriction it can only cool so well. I would think buying a $25-30 H50 would still be a better cooling solution.

It took a little poking around, but I found the owner who made this.

This is posted in the AMD/ATI mod club thread.

The owner lives in the Philippines where things just cost way too much. So, he did the mod with good results overall. The heat-sink is a Xigmatech HDT S-1283. Large tubes and none of that sticky wick stuff.

"6850 toxic, and I must say its great and works for me.

Idle temp is 35 c
loaded temp is 55 c"

Hmmm.. I wonder how well that would work if you injected water into one side of the pipes and pulled it out the other side using a vacuum pump.

If you can get the water injection rate and the amount of vacuum right the evaporative cooling rate may be more than enough to cool a CPU :D

No this is a very bad idea! This is why they make Water blocks and not Heat sink blocks. Waste of time energy and good solder!

Other than the allure of some thing strange and weird why would you even want to consider this option? Do you really think it will cool your CPU better than a water block? Or is it just a fad that you really have to take a shot at to prove it will work? I think it looks stupid and would be far less effective than a Water Block Made to do the job right. Why would you even want to do this?

no it wont cool better then a water block but it WILL cool better then a stock hyper 212 and thats sorta the point run a pump though it put a fan on it in Push>Pull and :rockout:
I already have a pump that will do the job :p
water blocks are expensive when some time effort and care you can do something almost as good :p

Not as expensive as fucking up a MB, RAM, CPU, Video card and any other thing that will get wet when a leak spring up down the road from a poor weld job! I have had my water cooling setup for 4 years now and not once has it ever leaked! But hey I wish you all the luck and hope you do well. Just remember with the HSF and the solder and the time and all the copper pipe you would be better off just getting a water block, But hey what do I know right?

i have the wish to do something like this, but not totally.
my idea is to cover the fins onto a block, leaving the heatpipes in them. i would cover the open edges of the fins with metal, and make space for an inlet and outlet. This way the heatpipes will work their magic in transferring heat! and more surface area for the coolant to work!

You do know that the magic of non conductive coolant all but disappears as soon as it touches even a bit Of your loop, right?

That seems like it is very plausible to function the best. Using the fins to transfer into water, that's thinking outside the box a bit. Only issue I see is weight, make sure the board is laying flat on a table, it may be too much to support upright.

I like the idea it would make a decent fail-safe for if it would ever leak, and for all the people worrying about leakage did you ever consider that maybe non-conductive coolant could be used?

scientifically something like this as in the OP should be enough too cool itself with just the water rinning through it. i mean, its just replacing the fluid acetone with water.

it will also work even without flowing water, though not optimally. you would need a loud fan for that :D
