I'm using EVGA GTX 580 1.5Gb right now, but I want to upgrade to faster card coz in bf3 at 1080p, the min fps @ultra setting is 30-36, so its not smooth in intense graphic scene. I got a deal on used EVGA gtx 590 classified at $440, or I need a new EVGA GTX 680 SC+(not in stock right now, and gonna be $534.99).My max budget is $550.

I'd seriously recommend you to go for the GTX 680/ HD 7970 or wait for the next dual GPU cards, don't waste money on the GTX 590 which has proven not to be up to the standards it should have been.

eg: weak VRM circuitry

BF3 is heavily VRAM limited at ultra settings, so I would suggest getting a card with more memory as opposed to SLI'ing two GPUs with less memory as in the GTX 590.

I'm using a GTX 480 and I have never had any issues with BF3 @ ultra settings. Weird. I would get a GTX 680 if I had the money.

i don't have issue with my rig right now, but some time the min fps made me hard to shoot, so i need to upgrade. is your gtx 480 gives your 50 fps or more all the time in bf3? if yes, i think its weird with your system.I played my with rig @1600x900 with my old monitor and my fps never dip below 52, but with 1080p right now. its not By the way even gtx 590 is $100 less than gtx 680, gtx 680 is still the best choice?

Not sure what the FPS is, Never checked. I run everything maxed out on a Stock EVGA 480.

Yeah, given what is available, do not buy a 590.

A 680 or 7970 would be the best bet.

And between those 2, go with the 680 hands down... ATI is outmatched at the moment, the only ones who say otherwise are the staunchest of fanboys.

ultimately it's your call. do plenty of research then you will come up with a conclusion.

i own evga 590 and i played bf3 using dell u3011 and it was 60fps throughout the entire game. no complaint there. the only game it can't do 60fps at 2560x1600 is metro2033.

of course the first thing i do in any game is set all to ultra.

using 3930k no overclocking.

440 bucks is good deal. i paid 750+12% tax in canada from ncix in january. it has lifetime warranty. i don't risk anything by overclocking it. there is no need to. use it til it dies then evga maybe can give me the next generation card lol.

also for folding i tried it for the first time on my home computer and the stats says 69000 points/day. not sure if that's good or bad. but the computer is not usable when i run that program. so i got rid of it. not paying 600 bucks a year for electricity.

but i think about building another x79 with 680 to fold 24/7 in my office using their electricity. just don't let people find out. earn some evga bucks. lol.

Hey, I signed up so that I can contribute to this disucussion. Check this benchmark video on YouTube:

Nvidia GTX 680 DirectCU II Vs GTX 590 Performance ...

It's got the GTX 590, GTX 680 (Blue highlight) and the 7970.

With a few minor exception where the 680 beats the 590, the 590 tends to score 10-20% FPS then the 690. They are on par when the resolutions are low 1600x1200 or 1920x1200. But when the resoutions are 2560x1600, the 590 has the 10-20% advantage. So, you need to ask yourself, (1) do you play games at high resolution, for the 590 performance boost to be a consideration? (2) Is the the extra advantage worth it the expense of the extra 150W at load and perhaps the need to get an extra power supply.

I personally have a 720p projector (with a huge screen - 1280x720). The fact that I operate at this resolution allows me to really go nuts maxing out visuals and textures without too much of a performance hit. For me, I wouldn't get any benifits from the GTX 590. I'm currently on GTX 480 but will be moving onto the 680 soon...

I'd personally go for the 680. It's much lower power consumption plus it's effectively a 1.5GB card, which could get limiting in current and next gen games.
Also 590s were notorious for getting busted with overvoltage, There are a lot of youtube videos about that.
Although nowadays there are better choices like the 770 or the 7970 3GB.
7970 3GB has an extra gig of memory compared to either the 770 or 680, and it's a bit faster than a 680 and about the same as 770 for nearly 100 bucks cheaper (look up newegg). But if you have to have an nvidia go for the 770.
Although there is no reason why you wouldn't buy a 7970.

Edit: Sorry, didn't look at date.
