I am at work now, but last night I got my 670. It came with an overclocked core of 980 (up from 915 I believe) and stock 1502 memory.

I overclocked it by roughly +120 core and +200 mem, stable tested ran fine..but crashed about 15 minutes into some heavy BC2 action. Clocked it down to +100 and +180, and it was smooth for hours.

On benchmarking, it never ran over 71 degrees celc (the GTX 280 it replaced, at stock speeds, easily hit 90+ benching) and what's more, the fan never even broke 50%.

This thing maxed out Skyrim and I didn't perceive any FPS drop.

I also ran FRAPS on BC2 which is notorious for awful FPS. I have a 120 hz monitor, on BC2 with my 280 GTX I was able to get 120 fps sometimes, and 60-80 a lot at low/medium settings and no frills.

On the 670 I can easily put all of that on high with FXAA for the same FPS. Granted, because it's BC2, I don't get steady 120, it is quite nice.

The thing that impressed me most was FF14. I haven't played it much (because it was awful at release) but I tried maxing that game on my GTX 280 and it literally froze. Was 1-5 FPS and couldn't walk. On the 670.. I literally cranked every single setting to max with bloom and all that jazz and it didn't even slow it down an ounce.

This thing is an absolute beast, can't wait to SLI it.

I am not sure about the 660s.. I don't think they can possibly afford to make them comparable to the 670. They already ruined the 680 with this card. Apparently that extra CUDA core or whatever they disabled doesn't make much difference.

I'd be interested to see how if the 680 can start outstripping it on newer games once better drivers and more intense stuff comes out. Frankly, I think they over-engineered this round and it is a plus for us. Unfortunately the prices aren't dropping any time soon.

But yeah, seriously, get rid of your 7970 for a 670. At least if you can sell it back for what you paid. Keplar OP =P

I really want a deal on one with a non-standard cooler...just a matter of time waiting for one to come into stock.

If I could get two 670's for my 7970 I'd jump all over that!

That makes no sense and/or isn't worth the effort to sidegrade/downgrade.

Fair enough. I am not saying it's vastly better. However, it is entirely a better card for a good price drop.

BTW, the Gigabyte OC'd card I got on amazon for $399 and it is dead quiet, fan never gets over 50%. Absolutely wait for a non-ref cooler tho, they will show up again in the next couple weeks. Definitely don't bother with reference, this is my first non-reference cooler and it is a dream.

Exactly what erocker said.

at that resolution 2560 x1440 the 7970 is the better card to be honest. Assuming you clock it up (as all 7970's should) the performance is better. Yes it consumes more energy but fps on an overclocked 7970 at 2560 res is more solid.

But, if i could get 2 670's for a good price (not likely), I'd sell my 7970 and move over to sli.

I got my Gigabyte 670oc today and ran the same +100core and +180mem increases to compare to yours. My gpuz says:

gpu clock - 1080
memory - 1592
boost clock - 1159

But evga precision says my gpu clock is 1316 when I run a stress/benchmark?

Which is correct the 1159 boost number in gpuz or 1316 gpu clock in precison?

maybe both clock is right
1159 is the boost clock, and 1316 is the max boost clock
you can download a software called nvidia inspector to see the boost/max boost clock

I would most likely guess that 1316 is the right number.

However, run MSI Afterburner and run the Kombibuster or whatever it is called for a stress test. It should give you a live, actual clock (or GPU-Z on the second tab while running a stress test) and it should give you a live readout of the actual clock. Those should match up.

Thanks for the input SnapS4 and cmaxvt, I will dl nvidia inspector and the msi kombibuster tonight and give it a go. Although I am not new to overclocking, this boost clock and possible max clock has me unsure.

I have read somewhere to prevent GPU Boost from interfering with the clocks there is a setting in the Nvidia Control Panel [Power management mode > change to "prefer maximum performance" over adaptive]. Going to try this as well.

I wouldn't sell your HD7970 to get a GTX 670 or GTX 680. Unless it is a dud/No overclock HD7970. Or you can use Nvidia's Cuda cores for something (These cards are not as good as the GTX 500 series in Computational circumstances) Or you just got money to burn.

While others may say... "Yes sell your HD 7970 to get a GTX 670/680" I would honestly ask them have they owned both or are they just giving you that input because it's their preference not fact driven?

I on the other hand have owned both sets of cards. The 7970's and currently the GTX 680's. I did it because I wanted to play with both technologies. Plus I had the extra money.
But if your doing it to look for a performance increase you will be sadly mistaken. The games you get the performance increase in..... you will not notice it. Also in real world tests the GTX 680 is not that much faster then the HD 7970. I will also throw out that the GTX 680 does not overclock as well as the HD 7970 unless you have a cherry "Lucky" card. The 680 is cut off by it's low voltage maximum.

They are both wonderful cards and both have a lot of good about them in their own ways. But you would be better off waiting for the GTX 700 series or HD 8000 series. At absolute minimum wait for the GTX 680 Classified series.

Don't say someone didn't tell yah so :)

It seems like the 670 is truly the best choice for a video card right now... $400 for a top-end card with the option to add a second card when needed and get excellent scaling, and then a third when needed. As I imagine you can get away with a single card for a while, I think that the prospect of tri-SLI for $400+$350+$300 as prices drop is extremely awesome.

This is sort of what I plan on. Currently running single (this is by far the best video card I've ever owned.. especially at time of ownership.. I've always gone cheap with last gen models).

It already runs things well, but given I am running 1980x1080x120hz I plan on SLIing somewhat soon. That way I can pretty much ensure good settings, 120 fps and steady frames for the next year at least. That sounds awfully nice to me.

From my perspective, the HD 7970 is at stock hardly better than the GTX 670. I would be looking to recoup some of that investment in applying a 2 GPU solution since I moved to X79 Sli

I fairly agree. I think the 670 SLi is really a great price point.

Also, How do you like that Catsleap? I have the Planar 120 hz and I love it, but the Catsleap is an interesting piece.

I really don't know enough about it.. except the small bits of research.. it is an IPS that you can "overclock" to 100~ hz?

If those are the ideas.... Switching from a HD 7970 to a GTX 670 SLI setup..... to recoup some cost. Then that's a great idea.

But to switch for performance.... is not worth it. That was my point.

But on an X79 setup a Duel GPU design will be awesome!!
