indeed

ATI has something up their sleeve...i can feel it

imho that be the 7990, is all.

i think Amd is this time, doing what nvidia has done with the 680 , wait out the competition to tweek the end product accordingly, end of june some rumours are saying re its release, that would spruce the market up nicely.:) and bring the GK110's entrance call about.

Just one more thing to piss off the GTX 680 early adopters

GK110 in a geforce card will not be available this year, at least that's what I think, so I don't see what's the problem with the early adopters of the 680.

I think your right on ATIs part but I still dont see Nvidia releasing a GK110 GeForce variant until 2 years from now as previous cycles are anything to go by.

Nvidia hasnt even officially announced the die-size of GK110 or even the process it will be using. If we were to take the speculated die-size of 550mm2. We are looking at a 40nm process given Nvidias proven with 40nm / 520mm2.

GK104 is struggling too much on 28nm / 294mm2. We are more than likely see a beefed up GK104 in the 7xx series or whimpy version of the GK110, probably a GK114.

If cycles are any indication it will take 2-3years before Nividia can fit the GK110 power in a mature 28nm process.

refer to this post(as i just have again), GK110 Is out and about(nearly double doh), and if they Arent(im daydreaming again) makeing them they willl have lower binned parts now,,, would you have nvidia leave them aside 2 years:confused:

doh, here
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166177

refer to the above in a Few months time when K20 tesla's are out:)

I would refer you to the question I posed earlier. Has nvidia ever up-scaled die-size in its GeForce variations after releasing a flagship. NO

It would have to be a first in its history for them.

What I expect is the lower bins being used on Tesla varients like they always have.

its not lower binned parts being used on tesla presently, the K10 uses 2x GK104 as you know, and im only optimistic about it ,not sayins its an absolute surety, just imho

and nvidia like Amd and intel are not the companies they were , they have changed nvidia never released a dual gpu card so soon after the single.

Tesla has varient (GK110 / K20), Memory and cores

Just like Quadro and GeForce have varients just fewer

The GK110 specs are probably for big one with Full cores and memory. Later they will do what they always do.

1) Full cores / Full memory

2) Full cores / lower memory

3) lower cores / memory <---This is where those bins will go
^ This is the Tesla your wanting to be the GTX 6xx or GTX 7xx. It is just the lower-end Tesla (GK110 / K20)

Your confusing them with Quadro (GK104 / K10) and GeForce (GK104) series

Can't wait to see a 4GB card. should be a beast.

There's the EVGA 670 4GB.
So it's highly likely there'd also be a 680/685 4GB very soon.

yeh i must be getting confused with them ?????

anyways , so your saying nvidia are not capable of releasing the K20 they say is comeing soon this year based on the GK110 arch chip, and that the K20 will take 2 years

or are you saying that they will sit on that chip solely for compute Only and without using any of its off binned parts for geforce GPU's untill a GFX ver GK110 is made, wherein they will release it as a 7xx and in 2 years was the 580 really two years after the 480?? i didnt think so and nvidia like whacky nameing schemes ,

im expecting this Gk110 to be another 680 but with more cores , not even a 685 as at the minute theirs only 1 core count on 680Gtx's and that dosnt sound right:p

and your missunderstanding how chips are made , they dont make pro and consumer, compute and gfx versions of chips ,they make chip, just chip! and then limit it, or bin it according to its designated end use

the K10 has 2x680 because its so poor at compute( especially agaisnt expected gains) , so nvidia ,you can be sure are in a hurry to get Gk110 out.

It's highly likely due to Nvidia's naming scheme that GK110 will be GTX780 if it ever gets used on the Geforce cards.

I say this coz eg GF100>GTX480, GF110>GTX580 so since there's no GK100>GTX6xx maybe there will be GK110>GTX780

Its very much possible that the Geforce GTX7xx series will start with a high-end part.

"News" article is dated April 3rd. I doubt it's all that accurate considering nVidia just unveiled GK110 as being Tesla only for now.

I'm saying you will not see the GK110 / K20 as a GeForce product.

Understand the Tesla GK110 / K20 product line

2075 added memory to 2070
2070 GK110 / K20
2065 added memory to 2060
2060 lower count
2055 added memory to 2050
2050 lower count

All depending on how many Nvidia wants to introduce as the GK110 / K20. I suspect they will be changing the product numbers but you should get the idea of the Tesla product line. Its just not one single chip on one product and the bins go to Quadro or GeForce.

The GK104 / K10 Quadro and GeForce GK104 do similar naming and product variants with-in their series.

im expecting this Gk110 to be another 680 but with more cores , not even a 685 as at the minute theirs only 1 core count on 680Gtx's and that dosnt sound right:p

and your missunderstanding how chips are made , they dont make pro and consumer, compute and gfx versions of chips ,they make chip, just chip! and then limit it, or bin it according to its designated end use

the K10 has 2x680 because its so poor at compute( especially agaisnt expected gains) , so nvidia ,you can be sure are in a hurry to get Gk110 out.

Try a simple google on Tesla and it should explain the product line and variants if your not understand me. If you understand the GeForce GTX product line

690
680
670
660 TI
660

All be GK104 chips with differant variants Its easy to comprehend the Tesla product line.

I was only asserting if the GK110 is bigger than 294mm2 as reports are saying 550mm2 it will not be a GeForce variant since Nvidia never scales up from die-size.

GK104 is 28nm / 294mm2. The 780 or whatever will be smaller or same size. Nvidia has never made a higher die-size chip for its flagship the following year or introduced a bigger die-size chip to the line be it GTX x85 varient. So I doubt its the GK110 specualted to be at 550mm2.

It usually take them 2-3 years if the die size is 5xxmm2 or greater to get the similar performance scaled down to 2xxmm2 on the same Fab process. That would be GTX 8xx series at the earliest. So from that I think its reasonable to say it wont be the GK110 / K20.

I suspect the 7xx series will be on 28nm / 2xxmm2 chip not one of the currents ones maybe 3xxmm2 if they decide to bring back the computing power.

I'm not convinced this card will be called the GTX685. I definitely don't put any validity in the website this rumor is from at all. It does however give me an idea to start a website for rumors as people seem to eat this crap up! A little adspace and I'll be rollin in the dough.

No, the GK110 is NOT the GTX 690. That's 2xGK104 GPUs.

Currently, the only card planned with a GK110 is a Tesla GPGPU.

Your right. My bad I'm still waiting to know more about this GK112.

I will say that I have dealt with the Sales/Marketing team at EVGA. Yes they relayed the message that there is a more powerful card scheduled to come out this fall.
However I want to add..... If you wait long enough there is always a new card scheduled to release.
Next when I had this conversation with EVGA..... it was about 1 week after the release of the GTX 680. The conversation was pertaining to a customer (Of mine) and their out look of whether to upgrade their whole line to the GTX 680 or wait for the next gen.
This conversation is very common in the business that I am in. Especially when it comes to very large contracts and changing out parts to stay current is a pain in the ass.
I also know at this time.... EVGA revealed that the GTX 680 has a projected production life span of 18 months with about 10 to 14 months as the flag ship.
So take this how you want.....to me this answer was very confusing. On one hand it sounds like they are hoping to have a replacement out by Late fall..... on the other hand.... it sounds like the replacement could be coming much later then that.
In the end we decided not to upgrade this particular customer.

Just wanted to jump in here and offer that, for the most part, this thread has been written from the POV of enthusiasts, which is kinda the point... But I would say that the best way to look at (predict) the future of this large company's product releases is to look at it from a business perspective: what makes the most financial sense? I don't have the answer, as I am far from business savvy, but I don't believe that they would shoot themselves in the foot by releasing a new product line so soon. They have a strong lead over AMD, despite being significantly late to the party, and this is with only two* products, compared to AMD's 6+ desktop GPUs. I believe that we will see a lot more from this 6xx line over the next 16mo... Remember the way it went from 560 to 560Ti to 560Ti 448cores? I see them milking their new and awesome GPUs until AMD gets their s**t together....

*The 690 is just two 680s on one PCB, so I refer to the 680 and 670 (although one could argue that they are the same chip, they are two mass-production cards with competitive prices while the 690 is a very low volume flagship product)

Yes but the 560 Ti was on GF114 while the 560Ti 448 was on GF110. We havent heard much from Nvidia after 670 was released. WTH happen to the rest of the product line? Where is all the marketing hype?

I'm curious to know how GK104 scales once you start to cut ROPs. Usually Nvidia cuts ROPs when scaling cards but it didnt this time around with Kepler. 680 to 670 was about 11% reduction in Shader and clocks and it worked out well for the people who waited to get a 670 over a 680. Performance was great for the price.

I'll be interested to know how they will scale the rest of the GeForces 650 / 660 / 660 TI
Maybe W1zz knows.:slap:

This could be a GTX 685. And this is absolute speculation on my part but I read somewhere that the GK104 is being (has been) respun because it has issues (this the stock levels being generally worse than GTX 670). Could be a wafer issue, could be design of the SMX thingies.

It could very well be the exact same scenario as the GTX 280 --> GTX 285. Likewise, consider the GTX 580 came out to 'fix' the GTX 480.

I think Nvidia are fixing* the 680 right now and that is what he's talking about.

*by fixing i mean sorting any processes that are responsible for the trickle of stock coming out. A month or so after launch and there should damn well be FULL retail inventories of the 680 instead of 'pre order' and 'out of stock'. I think Fall might bring full 680 stock (especially as NV bought out TSMC's wafer priority - co-incidence???)

Sorry to be debbie downer on this one.

The GTX 200 was lacking in tech efficiency compared to AMD. AMD took a risk transitioning from 90nm to 55nm rather quickly. Nvidia was tryn to catch up to the 55nm transition from the 90nm it took them longer and re-spun the 200 line a handful months after there initial release to improve efficiency from 65nm to 55nm.
As far as i can tell all the 690, 680 & 670 are all on the same THINGIES from the numbers. Maybe the next chip has a story to tell.

On the stock side of things I was at Fry's this morning and they had MSI 670 in stock about 7 but no 680s or 690s

GK110 performance previewed: Faster than a GTX 690?

I've not seen this appear in the news section, likely due to its speculative nature, so I'm posting it here.

ocaholic.ch (German site) have done a virtual review of a GK110, based on the official specs released and assumed clocks similar to a GTX 680. Speculative stuff, but still interesting.

The "if rule": So if the drivers perform like the 301.25 we used. If we didn’t do any mistakes in the calculation and the prediction. And if the scaling works well like we analyzed with the GK104 then this card is a monster in performance. We don’t know the price, power consumption and the heat dissipation but what we can tell, if our results are very accurate, is that this GK110 is powerful. It will be around 1.8 times faster than a GTX 680 in synthetic benchmarks and 1.6 faster in games. In fact it can be compared directly with the GTX 680 SLI as in average it performs around 3-5 % better.

We remind you that those aren’t the real results of the GK110 performance nor random numbers, it is a prediction based on a valable hypothesis!
