Hey, no clue if you guys can help me, but I've tried everything and since I have no real computer skills I'm in need of help. I'm trying to run Dibalo 3 on my Laptop Envy 7, it's a gaming laptop 2 years old and runs most of all games old and new on high or ultra def. Now I can set up both my game details graphic and change the quality of my graphic cards up and down and still I crash.

basicaly the game crashes to desktop telling me the video card stopped responding and then it gets back into the game and crashes again and again. I don't have an overheating problem but I've narrowed it down to my graphics card itself. My windows is updated (Windows 7), but it seems my graphic card and my catalyst is stuck at Version 2010.06.21.2137.36973 even tho I downloaded the update from the websites multiple times with no success, it even tells me it has been successful both the download and the installing it remains on that old version. I've tried other driver download, like the auto detect from ATI but that just makes my PC bluescreen me and I have to restore my computer to an older version since my catalyst if off on the restart...

I know this looks like a complicated noobfest from my part, but I don't see any solution anymore xcept bringing my pc to the repair shop and franqly I'd rather fix it myself. So here's to my last ditch effort : )

PS: both blizzard and ATI support have been very unhelpful in treating this issue : (

PS2: I've heard one needs to uninstal the previous graphic card or catalyst to instal the new one being downloaded, I've tried the step by step on the ATI support site but the installing of the fabled 12.4 version that I need soooo bad didn't work.

Anyways thks if u can help me at all and im sorry for the long story :p

dunno if this helps, but usually when games crash like that its because the graphics card's clocks is unstable -- unfortunately its the only thing i can currently think of...

Try underclocking the card - say 20mhz on both the core and ram. if possible and see if it happends again. If it does then you could well have a faulty GPU

There is a 12.4b Hotfix that fixes problems with D3. Your card isn't on the list but who knows? Here's the blurb about it:

Issue Description:
We’ve recently identified an issue where some of our legacy graphics products are producing certain artifacts in Diablo III and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with our latest release of AMD Catalyst™ 12.4. This issue affects users of ATI Radeon™ HD 2400, 2600, 2900, 3400, 3600 and 4500 graphics cards.

Resolution:
This issue has now been addressed with the AMD Catalyst 12.4b hotfix driver. Users of the ATI Radeon HD 2400, 2600, 2900, 3400, 3600 and 4500 graphics cards should download this hotfix driver.

Hi Zuljin, you didn't mention where you downloaded your drivers from. I am assuming AMD.
It could quite possibly be that your laptop requires OEM modified drivers for the graphics processor.
Have you tried visiting the drivers section of your laptop manufactures support webpage to see if they offer an update? I believe the manufacturer in your case is HP, and HP are known to use modified drivers with some of their laptop lines. See if the manufacturer offer an update for your laptop, and if they do install that one.

let us know how you get on.

5850 isnt a 'legacy' GPU. I dont think it would make any difference if he installed this hotfix or not

some OEMs were known to do this in the early days, most dont even bother as it costs them money and why waste money getting a special driver made when you can let the manufacturer deal with the drivers instead? less hassle for the OEM, though the problem might still exist for different hardware but this is also because the hardware the laptop OEM used isnt the original vanilla version of the component they are using but a customised one made to order by the manufacturers so the retailer/OEM can keep costs down.

I welcome the fact that the Desktop and Mobility drivers are all packed into the same installer so that people dont need to chase down the 'mobility' version of it since the tool ATi used would only let you download the driver if your laptop was supported by one of their certified/registered partners.

I had a BenQ laptop once with a X1600 Mobility Radeon. ATi wouldnt let me download the drivers because the laptop wasnt from one of their registered partners like Asus or DELL etc etc.

despite this minor set back. the drivers were always located somewhere on their servers and people would put link it in the forums which bypassed the whole process of having to go through their 'assesment'

I have an envy with a 6850. Everything is fine for me, but sometimes the overheating will make the computer go into hybernation to avoid damage.

I fixed this by using VSync.

A problem as noted by Freedom Eclipse is that the drivers are specific to the laptop manufacturer for some reason, so the updating isnt quite the same. I think this has to do with the fact that the video card is manufactured onto the motherboard (or otherwise exclusive to the motherboard).

If this were to happen to me, these are things I would do: (PC gamer 15 years, computer tech 7 years)

1. Check the event viewer.
2. Google the issue. Keyword combinations: (5850, Envy) (CTD, Crash) (Diablo, D3)
3. Mess with different settings in both the game and CCC.
4. Update sound drivers. Sometimes Sound might be the reason you are having CTDs. Make sure your sound is at 44khz instead of 48 (this can sometimes cause problems)
5. Check with other process running at the same time.
6. Reinstall Diablo 3 (one of my least liked options)

alrighty then

I'm a terrible noob when it comes to computer sorry : (. How would I manage to achieve this underclocking?

Also I'm still pwning my head on a ciment wall trying to figure out how to update my driver coz eveytime I do so (the one dirreclty from the website AMD with the very spec for my computer (Hd mobility radeon 5850, windows 7 64 bit, and so on...) nothing changes version remains the same, It makes no sens to me and of course ATI's support service has yet to awnser me.

Thanks alot for all the comments I really appreciate all of the reply, 1 step closer to fixing this dumb issue :S.

well since your not so tech savvy, I suggest doing a clean uninstall first.

#1 - Download and install a program called DRIVER SWEEPER

#2 - Uninstall your old AMD graphic drivers from the control panel then restart your PC in SAFE MODE

#3 Start up driversweeper and it should look a little like this:

Notice how theres a list of manufacturers in the main window select 'AMD - Display' - make sure its ticked in the tick box then click 'clean' on the bottom right.

Let the program do is business and it should tell you that it needs to restart the laptop to complete the task. OK it and let it restart.

--------

after that just boot into windows like normal and just run the AMD installer again and let us know if that fixes the problem.

Hey, it worked great :) computer running on the new update catalyst thks alot.

However, of course, it didn't fix my issue with the game Diablo 3, now crashes are so hardcore it game me a black screen that i couldn't get away from, had to manually shut down my laptop and reopen it... lol... I'm gonna try doodeling with the graphic settings see how it goes, but I still don't understand why it doesn't work :(

But again thks for the help on the driver install, that was an amazing pain in my ass lol

In which case im not sure then. Googling the issue brings up multiple posts in mainy in battle.net forums. Did you make those posts?

update on my situation

Hey guys, so now everything on my computer is completely up to date and i've noticed an improvement in general graphic and performance. however my crashes with this game are still happenning, less frequently but I still only last about 5 to 10 mins in game before a crash. Blizzard still hasn't given me another awnser to my problem.

My crashes are a little different, so maybe you might know what is happening now, Upon crashing now the game is freezing for 5-10seconds before it lets me back into it but this time my luminosity is gone, meaning my entire screen is darken, I can still see the game but barely and it usually crashes me again a couple of mins after. And sometimes (if not often) I get a complete black screen, where I still ear the sounds from the vent or of people on ventrillo, I can also talk with them but the screen is completely black and no controls can return me to my desktop or close any application, I litteraly need to power my PC down and then back up again.

I don't have the necessary knowledge to try overclocking my computer nor do I wish to knowing the consequences and I cannot handle more heat from my laptop, sitting at 90-95C in gaming session, wich I heard was ok for laptop (sitting on a permanent cooling platform).

So if u guys know any other things I could try to fix my situation or to let me know I'm doomed lol :p

Have you cleaned out the laptop lately?
Dust build-up could be causing your problems with it running too hot.

sitting at 90-95C in gaming session, wich I heard was ok for laptop (sitting on a permanent cooling platform).

Bingo.....

Even with a huge cooler on my 6970 it occasionally gets close to 90'c (Id change the cooler but sadly Im shafted by the warranty which prevents me from doing so)

90-95'c is not ok. dont forget the fans on a laptop are much smaller/thinner then their desktop counterparts. This also means it moves less air. and even though the heatpipes that cool your CPU and GPU are working as they are designed to. the size of the fans are the limiting factor as they cant clear the hot air and the heat from the heatsink quick enough too keep the system cool.

Unfortunately its a design flaw with a fair few HP laptops. HP occasionally use these rather thick thermal pads inbetween the heatsink and the heat source which are great for mild to heavy use but not extremely heavy use such as gaming & crunching/folding or any activity that put serious stress on the cooling system of the laptop.

The only solution to fix this is taking the laptop to a specialist tech and see if hes willing to open the laptop up give it a cleaning. and re-apply the thermal paste if HP are not using the pads or ask him to install a copper shim for you which would make direct contact with the heat source instead of the thick thermal pad being in the way.

This solution has worked for me in the past with an older laptop that was overheating while gaming and a friends laptop that kept going into thermal shutdown.

Id would do the work for you as i know where to source the copper shim but you are probably not local to me let alone on the same strip of land.

Ok be here's somethin...

Alright but then why can i play any other game, including very recent and demanding one on ultra or high settings run with the same heat and never have any issue, for a good 2 years now never go above 95 c.

Been playin on my bro's laptop which is 5 years old, vista service pack 2 and a nvidia geforce 9600m gt and i experience the same heat but without any lag or crashes, playing on low settings however.

some games might not stress the GPU out as much as others do. and even though the game is demanding the code might not stress it as much as another game, thats why its always good to play different games when it comes to stress testing an overclocked graphics card.

The reason why your brothers laptop doesnt crash while gaming can be for many reasons... Older hardware runs hotter so can be said to have a higher heat tolerance then something that is designed to run cooler. Maybe it better ventilated or the heatpipes inside are wired up in such a way that it it manages to keep everything below the red zone.

Generally speaking though your 5850m is leagues a head of the 9600m and it runs hotter given the improvement over the 9600m. other things to consider is the thickness of the general size of the laptop.
If its a real thin laptop then cooling will definitely suffer

its like cramming a 6.0litre V12 into a mini while still running with the same radiator/cooling system etc etc.

Zuljin101 did you blow out your laptop like Kreij suggested? If not then you need to do that. Also, I install MSI Afterburner on my laptop to check temps in game. I use a cooler that my laptop sits on to keep it cool or my Laptop will crash like yours. the lap cooler ensures the correct amount of space is there to keep your laptop cool. People cuddle up on the couches and lay there laptop on top of there blanket which in turn suffocates the laptop.

Update on situation

Alright, I was about to give up, but tried somethin new... Reduced my heat to 80c in full gaming session, turned I was an idiot and was blocking my laptop fan with my cooling platform, talk about ironic. So yeah now im at 80c in the worst of cases and experiencing the same cashes. At this point im guessing its a problem with the card and the coding of their game, next time a buy a pc, laptop or desktop def going to Nvidia...

Also did a full reinstal of the operating system, reinstalled all the drivers and update available including hp's one and reinstalled the game... Nothin, same deal... Either i be patient and hope for a fix on blizz side or I give up at this point lol, nothin else I think I can do.

Anyhoo thks for all the help, I really appreciate it all.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
Funny point on non supported card i run diablo3 on my main comp (logical) but i can also run it on a nettop 1.5ghz athlon neo x2 with a HD3200 2gig ram under win8 (funny tho...) or on my netbook wich has a C60 1ghz and a unsupported HD6290 with only 1gig ram instead of the recomended 1.5

Never got any crash with D3 i guess its more bas luck than tech issue (or faulty hardware from HP tho my main comp is a HP but desktop. )

Edit : i did get some error on D3 with a Nvidia gtx 460 (1g ddr5 256bit bus) xD
