So once again I've been chosen to choose a laptop for someone in the family. It's really not needed for anything special so buying 2nd hand and all priced around the same so purely asking for help on which is the best for all round daily use.

HP NW8240

Acer Extensia 5210 (all I know it's a 1.7Ghz dual core)

Toshiba a200

Newly added: Toshiba Satellite L30

(specs for the L30):
type : Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T2080
clock speed : 1.73 GHz
Front Side Bus : 533 MHz
2nd level cache : 1 MB

size : 15.4 "
type : WXGA TFT display
internal resolution : 1,280 x 800

DDR2 RAM (533 MHz)

weight : starting at 2.74 kg

All of the above will come without a HDD, no OS but will have 2Gb of RAM

you could have saved us a bit of hassle by providing a link to each of the laptops but anyway, I did the breakdown for you based on a few mins with google and what info i could find, no need to thank me..

HP NW8240 - A workstation laptop which was released in 2005 - uses a single core 2-GHz Intel Pentium M 760 according to HP and runs with a 128mb ATi Mobility Fire GL V5000 - weighs about 2.6Kg so its a little on the heavy side

(probably not the exact model but this is one of the only ones i can find from the same series/lineup...)
Acer Extensa 5210WLMiV2 - Intel Celeron-M 520 1.60GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB L2 Cache, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 - Laptop was released around 2007 as the CPU came out january 2007. so its slightly newer.

Toshiba a200 - is a desktop replacement unit, has Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology featuring Intel® Core 2 Duo ProcessorT5450 according to toshiba's website based on the A200 1YO model, intel® GMA X3100 graphics, weight starts from 2.72Kg which is quite heavy again but fine for a desktop replacement.

----

Id say your choice is between the Acer and the Toshiba, id pic the Acer due to the smaller size. its hard to come up with a definite answer when you question just seems so vague based on the information available.

Sorry, I do agree with you completely. The info I got from the guy was what I posted I did try a google search but gave up as I couldn't get any specific info on the laptops in question.

Honestly though thank you for helping me out with the info and your thought's on which is best.

Would be paying around £90 and overall isn't much more going just a mere £10 more to round it off to £100 (Could possibly give a little extra if needed).

Oh well, I was gonna say you pick the cheapest laptop out of them all and then spend the rest on upgrading them. Core Duo or even Core 2 Duo laptop CPUs go for pretty cheap on ebay.

I'd say get the A200. All of them are low performance by todays standards, and the a200 seems to have a decent amount of power from the 4, the others were low end even at the time they were released.

I tend to have bad luck when upgrading laptops so it's something I wouldn't want to do unless I had no choice.

The Acer 5210 is apparently a dual core already at 1.7Ghz, really can't find no info on this... I'll ask the guy about it.

Thanks :) but it's not needed as it already has been upgraded to a dual core. So the choice is what, either the Acer 5210 or the Toshiba L30?
