A lot of them yes, but these are around ear, so there shouldn't be too much ear wax. I bought my 650's used and they were totally sanitary. Awesome headphones for the price; just make sure to get a headphone amplifier if you don't have one already.

sennheiser makes awesome headphones. I first bought the 555 from them, and I asked myself the same question. Then I found a 650 used really cheap a while ago with a good return policy, so I bit the bullet.
But this is probably the best purchase an audio that I ever made.
I literally enjoy my music more with these headphones. It's hard to explain, both of the realism these headphones present is uncanny. I hope I don't sound too much like an advertisement haha.

$340 for headphones... Pardon me being a disbeliever. I just got an entry audio setup, xonar dg and jvc rx700's. Sounds suprisingly better than stock. I can not imagine $340 headphones sounds that much better

i can guarantee that the HD650 will sound much much better than the RX700
I myself uses an HD600 with the HD650 cable, and it sounds amazing even unamped.

especially if you have a proper desktop amp to plug in the HD650..
if you just using the xonar DG or usual soundcard, the headphone potential wont be showed that much..

and the HD650 scales very well in DAC and AMP upgrades...
I tried the HD650 with different setup and all gives out different results..

Audio Technica ATH-AD700 for life. Have one brand new one still in box as a spare for when my regular pair ever dies. Tried some Sennheiser 558's once, but they just didn't sound as good to me.

$340 is a bargain for these headphones. They normally retail at about $500. Sounds like a crazy number, but they really are that incredible. If you're happy with your setup james888, then don't change anything, but if you're ever in the market for a really nice headphone setup, go to a hi-fi store and audition these headphones. On a proper setup, you'll see what we mean.

Can't go wrong with Audio Technica either. Awesome value. If you're just listening to music, the Sennheiser 558's probably won't do much for you, as they're more of movie headphones (pretty nice for games too). The 280's are more up that alley.

HD600 and HD650 are not Hi-Fi and they really need a good amplifier. I don't even think Sennheiser makes the best Mid-Fi headphone.

nah..
HD650 and HD600 is HiFi in sound quality, those headphones are released in 1996 (HD600) and 2003 (HD650)
both of these headphones are flagship in its days, and it still now for pure musical bliss. not technical.

for its competition like DT880, K701, HE300. those headphones just cannot compare on the musicality provided on a properly amped HD650/600.

bumblebee, i see you have a HA-160, what headphones you use it with it?

IIRC the HD 650 used to be Sennheisers flagship headphone and it is considered Hi-fi.

The HD600 are more neutral sounding than the darker more warm HD650. I'm still considering to buy the HD600 for around 300€ but need money first :p

HD800 is HiFi. HD600 and HD650 are Mid-Fi and I think AKG and Denon have better offerings.

Audeze LCD-2 with aftermarket cable.

it really depends on what you look for in headphones. If you want extreme accuracy AKG all the way. Sennheiser hd 650's are not monitors since they are extremely colored, but still certainly excellent headphones. It's pretty much all subjective at this point.

Same with what is considered a hi-Fi. A lot of people consider bose to be HiFi  HD650's are at least borderline :p

This.
There is no universally the best headphone, since it's all subjective. Some will find that they prefer the 650's instead of HD 800 etc.

most of this headphone i see in this discussion are for rich in my opinion, if you dont have to make music spend 1000€ or plus for headphone is crazy, yesterday i reactivate my creative live 24 external with new driver and use it with my modified earcups on my sennheiser hd437 , i use this headphone with my kenwood external amplifire or my home theater dvd from philips with 200watt and sounds very good , i tell this why i think quality is not in the price ,300$ is not crazy but if they need amplifire try the models from schyte or a good soundcard or external system
