I just voted "I will not be buying an HP product in the next 12 months" in a TPU popup poll and I felt the need to expand on why to no one in particular.

I was just working on a 14 month old HP laptop that wouldn't boot. No thanks to the worthless Hard Drive Diagnostic built into the BIOS, I determined that the Seagate hard drive had failed and couldn't complete a short or long S.M.A.R.T. using SeaTools. So I look up the model and serial numbers to see if I can RMA the drive, but Seagate doesn't warranty OEM parts and I am instructed to contact HP.

Now I have the pleasure of dealing with HP customer support. Apparently after a year HP tech support doesn't do anything free of charge. I was given the option of letting them "diagnose the problem" for a fee slightly greater than the value of the drive after which I would have the option to buy a replacement part, awesome.

I find it rather irritating that the drive essentially lost at least 2 years of warranty just because HP installed it.

These things happen, HDD generally die of natural reasons, if you move your PC a lot then it is a major issue. It's not really Hp's fault, blame Seagate, i've had the fortune of having WD drives in all my HP laptops. only 1 has ever actually failed on me, and gave plenty of warning. just because of 1 bad experiance you can't condem a company of bad service....

If we all lived like that how the hell would we work through every small issue we have....

I recently saw a bar graph on tpu showing the return rate of laptops during their warranty, and HP was basically the worst. My friend also has a HP lappy and it had overheating issues - I pulled it apart to reapply thermal paste to the cpu and the looseness of the cpu heatsink was a joke. What i mean is that the heatsink screws did not tighten down very far before they hit their stops. So no, i will not be buying a HP. I believe samsung was the best on that graph i mentioned, but i could be wrong.

True that of course, but that's what frustrates me. When I buy a hard drive either retail or OEM from Newegg I get the full warranty of the hard drive's manufacturer (these days an average of 3 years). However this drive, bought as part of laptop, gets no warranty beyond the 1 year HP gives the laptop as a whole. When a drive of mine fails, them's the breaks, but I expect a few years of guaranteed replacement.

Maybe I should blame Seagate with their OEM drive policy, but HP's attitude bothers me and has turned me off them.

That isn't exactly HP's fault, that is Seagate's and WD's policy, it is just standard practice, and you'll get the same response from any pre-built computer company.

I stay away from all hp consumer products because all my experiences with them have been unsatisfactory. However their workstation and server parts are pretty good.

There printers are garbage. The cheap one lasted 2 months, the business-class one has an inherent fault where it constantly emits a very high pitched sound that older people can't hear, but I can since I'm young (<20). Their laptops are also garbage. Not a single HP laptop I or my immediate family has owned (3 in total) lasted more than 2 years, and we don't abuse our laptops. I've been trying to keep my friends/family away from HP and so far I've probably cost them over $5000 worth of business since a lot of my friends and cousins are starting/attending college and need new computers.

In the last 12 years Ive bought two printers. The last one 6 years ago the HP photosmart c4200 and the other was HP also. I have no complaints. There prices are on laptops are great but they load there systems with crap so if you format it and reinstall then there fine

My father's old laptop is an HP and has endured 2 years in Saudi Arabia and more than two years over here in the Philippines. Still going strong and the only fault is the DVD-drive that my nephew essentially destroyed. Our Printer-Scanner is also from HP. The only problem with it is the relatively limited size of paper (specifically the width), but besides that it's been working through three different OS's now, as we bought it when XP was still the only Windows OS for home use, i.e. Vista wasn't released yet, was used in Vista when we got Vista, and then currently in use right now with 7.

I worked in a computer shop where all I did all day was repair HP laptops. Most needed a new Drive (refurbished is what they use). A particular model always overheated due to design flaws. Ive replaced mainboards, laptop screens etc. Worst case was i recieved a laptop to repair that had its screen smashed as if someone had thrown something at it.
After this experience with HP laptops and knowing what I learnt about their products, NO I wouldnt buy a HP.

If anything I'd say your are being paid by DELL to say that...but I think you aren't. :p
My Toshiba had an WD HDD that died while under warranty (lucky me). Stuff like that happens. I've seen HP laptops go trough hell (both SW and HW) and the problems that I had to repair was virus infections.

Acer is better than HP, as one of my friends has it running perfectly and it runs for 4 hours for a year.

Funny. I have had nothing but problems with Acer laptops. Most of the times due to overheating.

There printers are garbage.

No, their cheap printers are garbage. If it is an inkjet, I don't care what company makes it, it is garbage, even the "high end" ones. HP's cheap printers are garbage, but their workgroup network laser printers are tanks. I've still got HP 4000 printers that are coming up on 15 years old and still print like the day they were bought.

Their laptops are also garbage.

That I will agree with. Their laptops have a very big tendency to just stop working out of no where and not even POST, just power on and light the backlights on the screen, but not even begin to POST.

I have never had any problems with any HP product ever. Though I will continue to build desktops, I will continue to buy HP laptops. Those sleekbooks look pretty damn sexy!

Never touching any laptop that isn't from Asus, MSI or Origin. Might consider Alienware just for the looks though.

1. Good thing it was under warranty!
2. Warranty warranty.
3. I've had lasting HP laptops but my brother in laws was pretty awful. Their quality has dropped the last few years though.

My cheap HP inkjet is very good actually. I mean you can tell it was cheap, but that is kinda the purpose of it. As always you get what you pay for and I'm quite happy with that.

So you don't buy HP products because someone threw a rock at a laptop? Ok. And I'm sure every single manufacturer has a model that overheats due to design flaws. I've seen ones from Asus, Toshiba, Acer and pretty much everyone do that.
