vista vlc player and xvid

anyone got vlc player to play an xvid in vista? when i tried it today i get solid colors that fade in and out. very odd because the audio is clear. so obviously some video issue. im using the latest codecs. the xvid plays fine in media player but i prefer vlc because it is a lot lighter and stream 1080p movies smoothly.

I have the same problem. The same thing also happens on VLC on Ubuntu, so no idea what could be causing it.

I use the CCCP in Vista and XP with no problems whatsoever. It also includes Zoom Player(very powerful and customizable) and Media Player Classic (very lightweight, more so than VLC, iirc)

As far as Linux, I use mPlayer.

Try using the K-Lite Mega Codec pack, it wotrks fine for me on Vista. www.filehippo.com, then search the Audio and Video Codecs section for the Mega Pack, not the normal one.

why go to filehippo?

thats the place to get codecs and tools, why waist time searching for them when u can just go to a place thats full of them

mpc has its own issues, its dshow based, vlc had its codecs built in, i would ask on the VLC forums for help with it personaly.

zoomplayer is ok, but really vlc is better once your use to it,

remmber that all codec packs have their issues/flaws that can drive you CRAZY, like ffdshow is in many/most codec packs, you need to manualy set it not to support some formats because if it supports stuff like mp3,ogg,xvid you can have problems with some games and apps, its a real PITA.

thats why anymore i just stick with VLC for video, Windvd for dvd, TCMP for audio, and rarely use corecodecs for windows(h264 codec is kickass for windows, lowest cpu use of any h264 decoder on the market)

That's why I suggest the CCCP. It doesn't have the configuration issues of K-Lite. They took the time to set it up properly. I have never run into conflict issues with it. (Unless I changed settings myself) The fact that Mplayer and Zoom are DirectShow really has little to do with anything, all that matters is that it works.

As far as VLC being better than Zoom, that's your opinion, but I disagree. First, VLC doesn't display .ass and .ssa format subtitles properly. It displays them as generic DVD style text, Whereas those formats actually hold font and placement info (such as placing translations directly on a sign, for instance). Second, Zoom is much more powerful once you learn how to use it. I'm not saying VLC is a bad player, I use it on Linux and Mac, it definitely has it's place, but it's not the end all-be all of video players.

I had the same problem, here's how I fixed it:

1. In VLC, go to Settings->Preferences
2. Click the + sign next to Video
3. Click on Output Modules.
4. If you get a blank page, tick the "Advanced options" check box (bottom right).
5. Change the Video Output Module from "Default" to "Windows GDI video output"
6. Click Save.

XviD playback is now working a treat in vista with VLC.

I noticed with GDI that keystrokes no longer work in full screen mode. So instead, I recommend "OpenGL" - this seems to work even better. Improved video quality over GDI as well.

installing a codec pack will not help VLC as it uses its own codec pack thats built in .
