Old rig back to life

I don't have pictures yet but here's a rig I've built from scratch. Don't know what it will be used for but I had fun doing it!

Motherboard: ECS K7S5A Pro V5.0

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ skt 462

Memory: Kingston KTD-DM/512 (2X) 1gig

GPU: Nvidia GeForce MX440SE 64megs DDR

HDD: Maxtor 40 gigs

Optical drive: LG DVD/RW


What would you do with it? Those who would dump it don't bother even answer!

#1 use it as as a software test bench for suspicious programs

#2 set it up as a small file or media streaming server

#3 use it as a dedicated firewall with opensource software like Smoothwall

#4 give it to a member of family who hasnt got a PC and only needs to do mundane tasks.

#5 attempt to upgrade it as best as you can and try and get it crunching for TPU

I could get a better video card and use it for soemthing useful or transform it into software testing as you said or old games rig.

If youre lookin to use it for an old games rig...youre gonna need some more ram.

I had an old single core skt.939 AGP setup that could handle games like L4D at high settings usual a X850XT PE and about 2 GB ram.

game did lag a little without a dedicated soundcard though.

Im not sure how good your system would run. the HD4670 was the last AGP card - its quite a rare find and can be quite pricey when found. the H4670 should make a lot of difference to gaming compared to my X850

The 4670 would be killed by the Athlon xp 3000+. To much of a bottleneck. I personally used a hd2400pro with my Axp system and it did great. I also would upgrade the memory to 2gb and it will do well. What os are you planning on running with it? I was running xp sp3. I am actually going to bring that system back up soon.


You can use it as your main web surfing machine and to play some older games. I played up to Unreal Tournament III and quake 4 on mine and it did good. Love for the old socket a's

I already have an HIS IceQ 4670 AGP here. The problem is that it's overkill for all older stuff I have.

Exactly, a 9800 pro/xt or, like I use, a hd2400 pro pair well with a Athlon xp system.

What would you do with it?

Install a raid card and turn it into a NAS with FreeNAS
