AMD Radeon HD 8970 - 30% to 40% Faster

I agree 100% If they priced the 8970 at $399 for one,I will buy it.Just $1100 + for the 7970 and only get 5% performance over my 6970 crossfire(which is with in 2% of a 6990)was not very good update.Come to think of it was there not a post Monday or Tuesday about 7000 series price drops?

Well, I got my 7970 for about $370 a couple days ago, so I don't see where you get that $1100 from

Just curious to know you think that would be a bad move. I don't see them getting released until perhaps Mid to late December. But I am sure AMD wouldn't want to eat up the 7900 series success so soon.

Exactly. If they lowered the prices on the 7850 - 7970-cards even further (and 7770) and only released the 89xx cards it might work, but it would still be too early imo. The 68xx cards are still plenty in stock, and they would be pushed right away (or would compete with the 77xx cards) and AMD's lineup would get very confusing. They have to clear out some stock before going forward.

He was talking about on release date.. That's why he didn't upgrade his 6970's to 7970's.. because of the little performance gain, and that it would cost 1100 bucks then to upgrade... $550 + $550 = $1100 or $550 * 2 = $1100 or 2 * $550 = $1100 Damn my math skills are amazing.. lol j/k On a side note if this 8970 comes in under $450 it would kickass.

Do what I do, always skip a generation, then it makes it worth to upgrade if you compare the performance.

I went from a HD 2900 to HD 3870 to HD 4870 (x2 Crossfire) skipped HD 5870 and got a HD 6970. Skipped the HD 7970 and might move in for the HD 8970 kill.

Skip _a_ generation? Huaaahahhahaha! I'm still rockin a 4850 X2 because it still does the frackin job and my 'peen is greater than those that judge it. Ask my gf.

My GTX460 has been begging for upgrade. tho it still serves me well.

Wouldn't they clear stock by deep cuts to the HD 6000s. I don't think the 6000s would compete with the HD 7000s. I can see it this way the HD 8900's become the high end, the HD 7900's become the mid and the HD 6900's become the low. This could put alot of pressure on the green team if AMD choose to do it.

They're only cutting $$$ to make Nvidia look even worse this round lol. There is still too much "old" stock in the market they need to clear out before bringing in the new stuff

They have to maximize their returns on every product and if they were to release the 8xxx series Q4 of '12 i think it would do more harm than good. Unless Nvidia surprises everyone with the real Keppler i don't see it coming to market so soon. Paper launch, maybe. Hard launch with product in sales channels and on shelves, doubt it.

Would you expect anything else? I got $1100 into my 2x 7970's, if you want to play, you got to pay. Unless you wait, then you don't pay so much, but then the next gen looms.

If that's the cooler required to keep the 7990 from melting, I don't see AMD manufacturing a vanilla one.

I read an article on this site stating AMD isnt launching a reference board. Amd stated 3rd parties can make 7990s/x2 boards.
