Operating Systems Retail/OEM still OEM?

Just a question.

I know there is a version of windows which is just the product key and which is OEM and then there is the version which has the disk which is sold by online retailers.

Should the version with the disk still be stated as OEM or allowed to be stated as retail?

OEM has nothing to do with coming with the disc. Weather the OS is retail or OEM depends on the terms of the license. An OEM copy is not supported by Microsoft, it is supported by whoever installs it on the PC. A retail copy is supported by Microsoft. Also, an OEM copy can't be sold to the end user, it has to be sold to a system builder, which is why most online retails require you purchase a piece of hardware along with an OEM copy.

Yes exactly what I had assumed.
It's all to do with the license not whether it comes with a disc or not.

OEM comes with a disc but as newtekie1 said it is sold only with at least a piece of hardware.

OEM only comes with one disk ether 32 or 64 bit. Retail comes with both 32 and 64 bit. OEM is not transferable has to stay with the PC it was installed on (according to the license)and retail is transferable if you uninstall it.

Personally, I live OEM disks

I just know product activation will kick in requiring a call to MS after 10 Installs of the same OS on the same exact hardware

I don't think that happens with OEM. I think Ive installed it over 10 time on my same PC and with new hardware ie GPU, motherboard, hard drives and without. And I have never had to call them.

I thought the OEM license is tied to the motherboard while the retail is not. :wtf:

Is this just something MS says to get people to buy the retail product or something?

I have an OEM XP and have changed motherboard numerous amount of times with the same license key and have only once had to talk to the Indians to explain why I had installed windows so many times.

They (MS), seem to be lax on activation, by my dealings with them. Guess they feel they got paid one way or another, OEM or retail.

But, I feel the winds are a-changing with their latest release.

I was expecting to have to cal when I changed the motherboard. But it activated on its own. My friend with a retail version has to call every time.

Was a time, my first XP OEM "re-activation" (I got an COA from a discarded computer), that I had to call M$, but since then done three or four others on an OEM COA, and never had to call M$, so I suspect you're right.

Also remember, if you have an OEM COA, you need an OEM disc and vise versa w/ RETAIL. the COA's are coded one way or another.
