Okay, so a value-alternative to 7870. I can see that. Less power connectors. Cool.

I also see: less IPC, a greater die size, potentially less clockspeed and over-all bandwidth.

7870 still looks nice, considering how often stock or overclocked reviews show it just passing 30 or 60fps in a lot of popular games. This will undoubtedly cause a cut to 229, which I think will be pretty much rock-bottom pricing for that product until we get something new. I won't argue, but I'll guffaw if this is a cent over $200 (I feel proportionally priced correctly vs. 230).

I guess it will be a nice alternative to 7850...faster no doubt and less hassle to overclock...but 1gb versions of that product are probably going to very cheap soon.

I guess the main question will be if it has the balls to be 'just good-enough' for 1080p. Below that will be covered by 7850 for cheaper. 7870 seems up to the task, if only barely...hence I question if this will be a reasonable alternative or not.

I really don't get the 6ghz ram btw...5ghz (stock) should be good-enough for any realistic core clockspeed.

That all depends on the price...here in the UK a 7850 can be purchased for £140, I cant see Nvidia launching the 660 anywhere near that.

Performance of one card vs. the other has nothing to do with discounted prices for certain particular 7850 models. In the US one can find 7870 at 230$ with rebate while a 7850 can be had for 240$ with rebate. This is just an example that you can't base a price comparison on certain deals. The AMD MSRP for the 7850 right now is 209$. I can bet the GTX660 will be launched at around that price. After that the market will decide how much NV can ask for the card.

Price and performance difference between:
6970/7970 - +49% price for +43% perf, clearly 7970 is shyte here
580/680 - 0% price for 29%, good

6950/7950 - 50% for 40%, clearly shit
570/670 - 21% for 35%, not bad

6870/7870 - 50% for 47% almost equivalent but no cake
560Ti/660Ti - 20% for 46%,

So based on my shitty elementary school maths I can conclude that AMD has shit pricing this round, while Nvidia is doing pretty well at the moment. Of course a few months down the road when prices fall things will change a lot etc but for the moment we are not paying more for less other than from AMD, at least according to RRP.

Edit: Its interesting to note that 6970 is just slightly more powerful than 7850, and the launch prices reflect that. Also, 580 is just slightly weaker than 660Ti but the launch prices are extremely different for the two.

Both are doing horribly, that ratio you are talking about should be ====> 0% for 50% for all the products, anything lower than that is a ripoff.

the guys over at TT say that the price for the 660 is "nearly identical" to that of a 7870.

as with the GTX 660Ti, TT has posted the Review of GTX 660 2GB days before launch

Overall the GTX 660 is just a really good video card that looks like it will come in at a really good price point. The HD 7870, though, is also a really good video card that comes in at a near identical price point. Of all the model battles in this generation of cards, the HD 7870 / GTX 660 is the closest thing to a coin flip when it comes to deciding what to buy.

It is good that the GTX 660 and HD 7870 will battle it out and give the consumers awesome performance for their money. The GTX 650, on the other hand, will no doubt get crushed by the 1 GB 7850.

You see, the 660 is up against the 7850 (while probably being more expensive but offering better performance). The 650 looks like junk right now and it will probably be in the 7750 performance.

Who said that 660 is up aganist 7850?
Performance wise is like 95% of 7870
and price i don't think it will sell for less than $240, the street price of 7870
So, for al intents and purposes the gtx 660 is directly competing with 7870.

670 - 7950
660Ti - 7870
660 - 7850
650 - 7770

Performance for all cards is better than the AMD counterpart (except we still don't know what that 650 will be) that is why some people tend to compare the lower ranked NV card vs. the higher ranked AMD, prices are better for AMD after three cuts that's why you have the 7870 at 240$. NVidia on the other hand is still going more or less with launch prices. The market will decide if they need to adjust prices.

Fixed that for ya.

It's like the potato argument...you say that, i say price is the key to who competes aganist who.
GTX680 $480 - 7970Ghz $430
GTX670 $380 - 7970 $420($390 w/reb)
GTX660ti $300 - 7950 $300($290 w/reb)
GTX660 $250?- 7870 $250($230 w/reb)

That seems a little more accurate, Nemisis. Just as the 6970 competed against the GTX 570, The 7970 competes against the 670. This time around AMD decided to push out a card on top to join NVidias. Similar to the HD 4890 coming out against the GTX 280.
Sticking with the "mine is bigger than your wang" attitude sort of hurt Nvidia since, when O/C, the GTX 660ti, GTX 670, and GTX 680 all come very close to each other. So close in fact that it probably cause a lot of buyer remorse.
As for AMD, the "I'm a big boy too attidude" made for a confusing lineup. Outside these tech forums, no one knows the differance between a 7950, 7950 GHZ, 7970, and 7970 GHz. After dropping the non-GHz 7900s, spacing seems much better than Nvidias though.

680 > 670 > 660ti >> 660 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 650
7970ghz >>> 7950Ghz >>> 7870 >>> 7850.............
